The first Godfather movie grabbed the meat of Mario Puzo’s novel, but there was still a lot of good stuff sitting on the shelf, and a huge demand for more. So director Francis Ford Coppola gathered up the remains, some of which took place before the plot of The Godfather, some of which too place after, and stuck it together for The Godfather Part II. On the surface, it sounds exactly like the kind of botched, illfated, hackneyed attempt at milking material for an unnecessary sequel that’s always plagued Hollywood. So peerhaps what makes The Godfather Part II so extraordinary is how flawlessly it works—the movie is every bit as good as its predecessor, and arguably the greatest sequel ever, winning Oscars for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor. Adding Robert De Niro to the reprising stellar cast (Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, James Caan) was a good way to ensure things got off on the right foot. Paired with the original, it’s simply the greatest duo of films in cinema history.
