Still Searching, the sophomore album by New Jersey band Senses Fail, debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard Top 200 last year, and each of the group’s three releases have sold a quarter-million or more to date. Those are impressive accomplishments, but Senses Fail’s all too common variety of watery, formulaic screamo will likely have all the staying power of mid ‘90s ska. It’s not that Sense Fail’s big guitars, melodic hooks, screamy breakdowns, and introspective lyrics are bad—they’re just bland. The same can be said for Florida’s New Found Glory, who, depsite stabs at sonic expansion on last year’s Catalyst, is bound to find itself in the dustbin of “embarrasing bands I used to listen to” once its core audience finally graduates.
Adam Franklin [ Swervedriver] (TIX @ FRONTGATETICKETS.COM)

A band ripe for reissue and all the attendant laurels and trappings that reissue treatment entails, Swervedriver played shoegazer rock that prioritized the “rock” part more than the gaze. The band’s swirl of guitars and vocals, always woolly and wobbling, owed largely to singer-guitarist Adam Franklin, an Englishman steeped in history and histrionics. These days, Franklin is palying solo behind Bolts of Melody, a recent album with hints of his past but a pronounced preference for less is more songwriting. One of Swervedriver’s many acolytes is Austin’s own Rachel Goldstar, a member of Experimental Aircraft, one of the city’s most reliable sources of heavenly space-rock. Goldstar’s latest side project, All in the Golden Afternoon, opens here along with Skiesfalling, who build mosaics of ambient, delay-fueled improvisation one heavily reverbed note at a time.

The buildup to Matt White’s new debut Best Days took the former University of Wisconsin student from palying in the New York City subway to tour dates with John Mayer and Sheryl Crow and a spot on the Shrek The Third soundtrack. Unfortunately, the result is a laborious, generic coffeehouse lament, produced with an exessive polish rivaled only by White’s rather threatening cliff of shellacked hair. Though the tunes certainly muster sincerity, they’re cheapened by layers of drippy guitars and strings. Opener Derek James ins an Australian singer-songwriter whose chipper pop combines the cute and cuddly inoffensiveness of Jack Johnson with the anesthetized swing of Brian Setzer; expect to hear goofy single “What’s that Sound” popping up in a Pixar film any day now.

When talking about Mickey Avalon, it’s easy to concentrate on his wild background—which includes prostitution, heroin, and all sorts of other things that should make Phanatic Films’ documentary about his life worth watching—but his music is just as noteworthy. Based in L.A., Avalon’s electro-influenced hip-hop—dubbed “glam rap”—is the perfect soundtrack for the kind of partying that surrounds him, and he does an excellent job of bringing that energy to whatever stage he’s on. Last year’s self-titled debut sports plenty of great moments, but they’re all taken to the next level at his already legendary shows. Here, he’ll be joined by fellow Dyslexic Speedreaders Andre Legacy and Dirt Nasty (a.k.a. former MTV VJ Simon Rex), who will surely help out with “My Dick,” which contains such deep thoughts as “My dick / the size of a pumpkin / Your dick / look like Macaulay Culkin.” Also appearing: DJ Leggo.
