Haunting Oboe Music + La Snacks, Transmography
Thu. 10/11 | 9:00PM @ The Mohawk (Downtown)

Haunting Oboe Music has no oboe, of course, but much to the consternation of anyone trying to pin it down, the Austin six-piece has just about everything else in its strangely expressive electro-emo stew. What it lacks in cohesiveness, HOM makes up for in mood, creating outsized melodrama that seems to come from a genuinely haunting place. The blissfully slacked-out La Snacks would have found good company in the mid-’90s sandwiched on a Pavement/Archers of Loaf bill, but even Pavement rarely wrote songs as simultaneously snarky and reverent as “Emo Kind of Love.” Electronic duo Transmography opens with synth-driven songs that are experimental, occasionally instrumental, and often just plain mental.

As an all-female punk band from Japan, it’s impossible for Gito Gito Hustler to escape Shonen Knife comparisons, even if the two barely sound alike. Instead of charming, innocuous pop, GGH rips heads off with a punk snarl that manages to keep a sugary edge on the sleaze. Last year’s Love & Roll showcases the band’s unshakeable riffs, as well as guitarist Yago’s hiccupping vocals, which weirdly resemble Cyndi Lauper’s on the theme song from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.
