Thirty years ago, the members of The Vibrators were already older than the members of today’s typical punk act, but they managed to ride the tide of loud ‘n’ fast groups with 1977’s debut Pure Mania and jabbing, poppy songs like “Stiff Little Fingers,” after which the famed Irish punk band named itself. Still armed with black leather jackets and blunt, irresistible hooks, the group now boasts a massive catalog, including 2006’s Punk: The Early Years, a collection of covers of contemporaries like The Clash, The Damned, and The Ramones.

The Theory of Implied Thought features socially awkward Stan (Mitch Baker), who is obsessed with unlocking the doorway to human subconscious, so much so that he isn’t living real life as it happens. When Stan finally discovers a wormhole into his own head (“It was there when I moved in”), he realizes that it may be a nice place to visit, but it is certainly not where he wants to live, especially with sassy siren Megan Smith waiting for him to join her in realityland. read more at austinist.com

There’s no understating the significance of the classic Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker spoof Airplane!, which ushered the anything-goes, see-what-sticks vaudeville aesthetic into contemporary comedy. If one joke doesn’t work, then there’s another one waiting a second or two away. An inspired parody of disaster movies like Airport 1975, the film goes any- and everywhere for a laugh, from outrageous send-ups of Saturday Night Fever to wonderfully groan-inducing puns (“Surely you can’t be serious?” “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.”) to a reworking of the old “Who’s On First?” routine (“Roger, Roger. What’s our vector, Victor?”).

Almost-unclassifiable (“art-hop” sort covers it) band Subtle made headlines a couple of years ago for all the wrong reasons. Tragically, a not-that-uncommon calamity struck the band when its van careened off the road after hitting a patch of ice, paralyzing keyboardist Dax Pierson from the chest down. Pierson has since become an inspiring figure, teaching himself the beat-box vocal techniques he puts to use on last year’s For Hero: For Fool. While Pierson is not currently on the road with Subtle, leader Doseone helms a band whose inventive music alone is worth rooting for. Local DJ dynamo Car Stereo (Wars) opens with his sly blend of hip-hop and rock oddities, a schizophrenic, Girl Talk-like crate-digging trip showcased on his recent debut The Bandit.
