Loudon Wainwright III has been recording in relative obscurity since the early ‘70s, unable or unwilling to adapt his darkly comical folk into something more commercial. Thank goodness. Wainwright has been more visible in recent years, as 2001’s Last Man on Earth met with effusive praise for its painfully honest take on the death of his mother. He also got a boost from a pair of unlikely sources: life as a television actor on the short-lived, geekily followed series Undeclared, and the rising-star status of his son Rufus Wainwright. Wainwright is touring in support of the new Strange Weirdos, the official soundtrack to the hit film Knocked Up—which just so happens to have been created by Wainwright’s old Undeclared patron Judd Apatow.

“I thought, ‘Oh Lord, can I really get it up?’” recalls the 49-year-old from her Bay Area home. “But when we started playing, the audience just surged up, and I felt the energy and thought, ‘This is great; this is not hard.’ The songs stand the test of the time.”read more at AustinChronicle.com

The Avengers’ career matched the music they played: loud and fast. Fronted by kohl-eyed spitfire Penelope Houston, the quartet was a force to be reckoned with in the late-Seventies San Francisco punk scene, and like many acts of the era, they only lasted two years and one posthumous LP and are perhaps better known as the band that opened the Sex Pistols’ final doomed gig at Winterland.read more at AustinChronicle.com

Frog Jesus is quite possibly the most fantastic short that we have seen ever. No, seriously. EVER. Writer/Director Benjamin Peters came totally out of left field with this one. When we read that it was a mere 70 seconds long, we of course assumed that it would be one of the more, shall we say, experimental shorts in the bunch. read more at austinist.com

Goldfish is a cautionary tale, one that teaches us that a little bit of information only adds up to a whole lotta t-r-o-u-b-l-e. Laboring under the misapprehension that Finding Nemo is the end all, be all of human existence, two little girls take the fate of their classroom goldfish into their own hands, not knowing that Pixar-land is in stark contrast to the real world. read more at austinist.com

Army Reserves Soldier Ben Patchett (Dash Mihok) was six weeks away from finishing his service when he was shipped off to Iraq, unprepared to deal with real combat. He should have been in support personnel, but instead was commissioned to drive a tank, which happened to hit an I.E.D., leaving him with five pounds of shrapnel floating in his body, an unrecognizable life and the omnipresent crushing weight of regret and fear. read more at austinist.com

A Los Angeles outfit seemingly on the verge of fame with 2003’s Everyone Down Here and 2004’s Treble And Tremble, Earlimart lost momentum when label Palm Pictures slimmed down its non-soundtrack music holdings. But the postmodern folk-pop group seems to have its mojo back on the recent Mentor Tormentor, an album of wistful, whispery melodies set atop grand chord changes that sound as if they were recorded on the moon. Chicago’s Office may hide behind gimmicky stage clothes (the band has been known to dress in power suits and bring typewriters onstage) but there’s nothing artificial about its sleek power-pop, which is big on hooks and shuffling new-wave dance beats. 2005’s self-released Q&A was a sleeper blog hit and garnered the group a high-profile fan in former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, who signed them to his own Scratchie Records for the just-released A Night At The Ritz. Opening: The Lemurs.
