A band as proudly progressive as Minus The Bear shouldn’t tread water with its third full-length. And yet Planet Of Ice triumphs precisely because it halts the group’s forward momentum in favor of hushed, brooding contemplation. The mood suits them. After the disc suffers a weak start with the grating, effects-hampered “Burying Luck” and the inconsequential “Ice Monster”—where new keyboardist Alex Rose spreads on way too much synthesized cheese—”Knights” perfects Minus’ glitch-prog with jabbing guitars, jittery effects, and Jake Snider’s tense yet smooth ruminations on sexual economics.
From there, Planets enters another dimension. With heavy debts to Pink Floyd and Adrian Belew-era King Crimson, the disc uncoils with a sinister playfulness that culminates in “When We Escape”—which sports a majestic, alien chorus that imagines Jawbox covering Alan Parsons Project. The just-as-sublime nine-minute closer “Lotus” is exactly what mid-period Cave In should have sounded like. While not a huge sonic leap forward for Minus The Bear, Planet shows the band eager—and more than able—to take a deep breath and explore its emerging maturity and depth.-The A.V. Club

Via Pitchfork Media:
“Some may hear these shopworn melodies and clamor “bar band.” But if Black Mountain ever tried to make a night-to-night living in blues cover haunts, they’d do it by torching the stage and leaving patrons agog in WTF stares. The Vancouver quintet aren’t some cabal of slack beer-bellied crooners; they can play their instruments, they have multi-chord vocabularies and, perhaps most importantly, they know how to give their songs proper recorded treatment. Black Mountain has that golden must-be-analog sound, with the perfect amount of tarnish to make the songs feel lived-in without burying them in fry grease. “Druganaut” fits better into the retro regalia the band revere, weaving a loose-limbed vamp that, besides a few simple chord changes, seldom varies but is gradually added to. The vocals don’t drop until nearly two minutes in, but the gap is barely noticeable.”
Black Mountain – “Druganaut”
Via Rolling Stone:
Flying in the face of arch Eighties revivalism, the Vancouver fivesome melds heavy-metal thunder, black-light psychedelia and blues-powered sludge into a stylish brand of stoner rock—as on the spaced-out single “Druganaut” and the low-fi Rolling Stones homage “No Satisfaction.” Black Mountain somehow caught the ears of Coldplay, who invited the band to open for them on much of their North American tour. It’s a weird pairing (especially if Black Mountain plan on breaking out the synth-heavy “No Hits,” with the lyric “Lemme holler against the pop-star dream”), but there’s no doubt that the band’s Monsters of Rock sound is arena-ready.”
