t shouldn’t be surprising to a see a DJ eating tofu (this is Austin, after all), but my stereotype-addled mind does a double take. Where are the bloodshot eyes, the telltale sniffle, the cooler-than-thou coldness in this friendly guy across the table? Turns out I’ve seen too many movies.read more at austin360.com

Austin native and hard-living professional Calvin Russell might not be a prominent rock star in his hometown, but in Europe, he is a bedraggled, authentic rebel cowboy songsmith who draws crowds by the thousands. Born in 1948, Russell joined his first band — the Cavemen — at age 14. Sucked into the hippie lifestyle in the 1960s, Russell found himself in prison throughout the decade for miscellaneous charges.read more at austin360.com

Gogol Bordello made its name with spastic live shows led by frontman Eugene Hutz—who took a star-turn as an actor in 2005’s Everything Is Illuminated —and a lineup fleshed out with violin, accordion, guitar, saxophone, drums, and writhing dancers. The self-described gypsy-punk cabaret sound is wild and chaotic, like an Eastern European take on The Pogues or Tom Waits. It works well on albums such as this year’s Super Taranta!, but it takes on a whole other dimension of dementia live. Opening: Dub Trio, DJ Dubta.
