Bishop Allen did a good job of putting itself on the indie-rock radar with a series of self-released records, and now that radar stands to blip faster thanks to the band’s recent The Broken String on the new label Dead Oceans. Bishop Allen’s sound measures in as charmed indie rock with a stately pop streak, full of both Wes Anderson delicacy and windows-down pop-rock blasts. Austin’s Jeff Klein is a favorite collaborator of artists like Greg Dulli and Joseph Arthur, but he’s still somewhat less known around his hometown than in the hipper corners of New York and Europe. That could all change with the upcoming release of Let’s Be Enemies, a record that takes the smoky, slow-burn style of 2005’s critically hailed The Hustler and gives it an ambitious wall-of-sound makeover. Opening: Martin Crane.

Featuring sunny power-pop, production by Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and +44 fame, and a vocal turn by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, 2005’s Commit This To Memory helped Minneapolis emo-rockers Motion City Soundtrack gain a sizable fan base. All of those followers are now basking in the rapture of Even If It Kills Me, the brand new album produced by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy) and Girls Against Boys’ Eli Janney, with a partial assist from none other than Ric Ocasek. Mae pounds out the kind of noisy emo-rock that kids seem to love these days, but while the Virginia-based group is certainly cut out for MTV soundtracks, that doesn’t necessarily detract from the shining anthemic feel of its new Singularity . Like both MCS and Mae (and a lot of other similar emo-punk bands), Anberlin knows how to write an infectious hook, though it’s hindered by predictability.

When I find an internationally linked artist like Federico Aubele emerge from the scene with a style largely native to his originative country, I am left quite impressed. With all these generic rock bands and glamorized pop idols currently striving for the epitome of “Western perfection”, there are a lack in artists who truly remember where they came from and which styles of music they were raised on. Aubele, a native of Argentina, is one of the talented few who is both confident and proficient enough to blend classically originative musical styles with melodies of a more contemporary nature. Providing an eclectic style of music that borrows largely from traditional Latin classical guitar compositions with a slight touch of mild electronica and orchestral pop, his music is rich and wildly fulfilling. However, with Aubele coming from the always exciting ESL Records, such enjoyable aspects are hardly a surprise. -Obscure Sound
