The Shaky Hands’ self-titled debut jitters and jangles like a burnt-out mind taking refuge in happy thoughts. The Portland band uses its lo-fi prettiness to expand, not to smother, the overall sound, leaving space for flutes, strings, and, of course, plenty of handclaps and white noise. Much more stripped-down but no less charming, Austin’s Yellow Fever continues to win admirers (they’re the musical equivalent of realizing you’re in love with your platonic girl best friend) including local label I Eat Records, which just added the slinky-cool group to its already impressive roster. This show serves as YF’s official coming out as well as a celebration of the release of Fields of Innards, an ambient, handmade release put together in 1999 by veteren percussionist Thor Harris (Devandra Banhart, Angels of Light). Harris’ Shearwater bandmate Howard Draper opens with his side project, Tre Orsi.

Through numerous sequels and countless slasher knock-offs, not to mention the recent Rob Zombie “reimagining,” John Carpenter’s Halloween is still the best of its kind, a suggestive and genuinely frightening horror film that’s worth the grisly flotsam left in its wake. After stabbing his sister to death as a young boy, the remorseless Michael Myers spent years in a mental institution under the supervision of psychiatrist Donald Pleasence, waiting patiently for a chance to return to his hometown. Assigned to babysit two kids on Halloween night, Jamie Lee Curtis is the only person standing between the killer and the town’s many horny teenagers. Defusing the tension somewhat here is Master Pancake Theater’s cadre of expert hecklers, who will be joined for this special performance by one of the originators of the genre, Mystery Science Theater 3000 writer Mary Jo Pehl.

Fatlip, erstwhile lead MC of The Pharcyde, is still touring behind 2005’s The Loneliest Punk, a smart, silly disc that marks a welcome return after being ejected from the group in 1995. That decade-long drought is nicely explained in “Writer’s Block,” which begins with a frustrated “Ah, fuck!” before continuing: “One out of every two people that see me/ in the street ask me about my CD/what style I will create/and what’s the delay on the release date?/ I hate to y’all the cold, cold truth/ I’m an old nigger in the vocal booth/ I could have been a legend like Big and ‘Pac/ But I caught a bad case of writer’s block.” Such clever, humorous honesty characterizes the album, and shoudl endear Fatlip to more fans than ever. Joining him for the “Over 30 Dirty Old Men Tour” is another Pharcyde alumnus, Tre Hardson, who will duet with Fatlip on som ePharcyde classics as well as showcase tracks from his latest solo effort, Slimkid3’s Cafe. Opening: Omni, DJ Cee Brown, DJ Twist One.
