A legend who continues to gain historical weight, recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee Afrika Bambaataa was an early-’80s visionary who gave the Bronx-bombing hip-hop scene a dose of Kraftwerk sheen on “Planet Rock,” one of the most significant hip-hop singles ever recorded. During his heyday, he gave rap a sense of science-fiction space fancy, calling on new-wave electro as much as funk, and he even helped shepherd in rap-rock with “World Destruction,” a collaboration between Bambaataa’s Time Zone project and John Lydon that predated even the up “Walk This Way.” Just as notable as Bambaataa’s ace selection skill in his wowing fashion sense, which often runs toward expansive and robe-intensive. Also appearing: Brownout!, DJ Manny, Bigface.

The Fiery Furnaces chopped up everything from frantic blues-rock to synth-y silly pop on their 2003 debut, Gallowsbird’s Bark, and apparently haven’t tired of building entire albums from scraps since. Siblings and leaders Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger usually make those scraps charming and catchy, keeping the hooks and art-rock trickery coming at equally befuddling speeds. They’re also compulsive storytellers (they even made a concept album about their grandmother, 2005’s Rehearsing My Choir) and the tales often make the songs a little easier to follow. Then again, even those are pretty easy to lose track of on the new Widow City, on which the Furnaces’ approach is a bit less satisfying than before, but still lively and elusive. Chicago’s Pit Er Pat has toured relentlessly since its 2005 debut full-length, Shakey, honing its airy, improv-informed sound on last year’s Pyramids.

You gotta love Collective Soul frontman Ed Roland’s self-deprecating humor. Early in his band’s set Wednesday night at Nokia Theatre, he stopped singing long enough to say, “We’re here to perform all those tunes you’ve heard way too many times.”
He knows what fans pay for, doesn’t he? With his four band mates, including younger brother Dean, Mr. Roland offered a little something from all seven studio albums, including the new disc Afterwords.
It’s easy to see (and hear) why Collective Soul has endured even after its commercial heyday. Onstage the energetic Mr. Roland, who loves to dance with the microphone stand, lent his potent vocals to his musical buddies’ competent batter of guitars, bass and drums.
They spit out songs so instantly memorable – “Run,” “The World I Know,” “December,” “Shine” – that you couldn’t help but join the party. And they’re still doing it. Now an independent ensemble that records on its own label, El Music Group, Collective Soul continues pouring out the goods. “Better Now,” a cool rocker that had the crowd of 2,400 singing along, comes from 2004’s Youth. The sprightly “Hollywood,” the groovy “All That I Know” and the catchy “I Don’t Want Anymore Friends” are all from Afterwords. They fit in seamlessly.-DMN

The band began when two friends, Jack Antonoff and Scott Irby-Ranniar, sharing a common love of music, began playing together. They busked in subways and alleyways in New York, and in 1999–2000 recorded a demo that garnered a large degree of record label interest. Despite the array of offers, the duo—calling themselves Steel Train after a Bob Marley song that they have covered—eventually chose to sign with Drive Thru Records, drawn by the support but also artistic freedom the label offered. In 2002, the band recorded their debut EP, For You My Dear, recruiting Evan Winiker (formerly of New Jersey pop punk band Random Task) and Matthias Gruber to help with recording and touring. The two later became full members of the band, first Winiker (who was presented as a full member in the promotional pieces for that same EP, released in January 2003) and later Gruber, who joined with second guitarist Matthew Goldman to complete the band and create Steel Train. Together the band went on to record the 1969 EP (a CD of cover versions of songs from that year that inspired the band and their sound), and a year later their debut album Twilight Tales from the Praries of the Sun, released in 2005.-Wiki

via Austin Sound:
“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”
