A longstanding centerpiece of the Ninja Tune label, DJ Vadim mashes up dance-derived breaks with blunted, left-field hip-hop. His 1999 album, U.S.S.R.: Life From the Other Side, remains an underground touchstone of sorts, matching Vadim’s beats to rhymes by backpacker godhead EI-P, Swollen Members, and tart slam poet Sarah Jones, among others. In 2002, he released U.S.S. R.: The Art of Listening, which featured more of the same worldly beats and breaks, along with rhymes by Blackalicious maestro Gift of Gab and newbies like Vakill and Yarah Bravo, the latter of whom teamed up with Vadim and Blu Rum 13 to make 2005’s Children of Possibility under the moniker One Self and will join Vadim here for this special Halloween-themed show. Also appearing: Abstract Rude, Pugslee, Atomz, Crew 54, Richardhenry, DJ Rythmic.

It would be selling Joanna Newsom short to say she’s the victim of a headlong dive into her own hype. But after 2004’s superb The Milk-Eyed Mender, which was essentially a scattershot collection of her early primitive recordings, she skipped right past adolescence and into the yawning conceptuality of last year’s Ys. With songs ranging from seven to 16 minutes long, the disc is a patience-testing exercise in tedious pretence and suffocating overdubs (including arrangements by Van Dyke Parks, who apparently thought it would be a lark to completly obscure Newsom’s simple, pure, harp-bolstered melodies with sodden washes of chromatically chaotic orchestration.) But (and this is a big but) Newsom is still stunning live, when her simplest qualities rise to the top. This show promises to be more special than usual, with Newsom accompanied by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, one of only six such shows she’s playing in the U.S.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a band with the name …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and a well-documented history of destroying its instruments onstage would be genuinely scary. In fact, Austinites know firsthand that things used to be a lot more aggressive in the TOD camp, but the band’s approach was so tempered on last year’s So Divided that even the Polyphonic Spree-sounding “Eight Days Of Hell” and a gentle cover of Guided By Voices’ “The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory” didn’t sound out of place. With the recent promising news that the band has finally freed itself from Interscope—or “prison,” as their press release calls it—Trail Of Dead seems to be intent on recapturing its brutal youth, starting with a fall tour supporting Dethklok, the fictional death-metal band of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, to be followed by recording sessions for its sixth album, hopefully with all pop pretensions forgotten. Opening: Black Joe Lewis And The Honey Bears, Migas.
