Phosphorescent is Matthew Houck, a songwriter who began his career by touring the country in his truck while playing folk and country covers. He’s gotten wierder over the years, hewing toward the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel on his strong debut Aw Come, Aw Wry, but there’s still lots of pedal steel, horns, and piano that slot as traditional. That’s a word few would use to describe Austin’s Weird Weeds: While the band occasionally offers soothing, folk-tinged pastoral sections in the one hand, it’s quick to make unsettling stabs of noise with the other.

Idaho singer-songwriter Josh Ritter continues to gain more attention with each release, and the new The Historical Conquests Of Josh Ritter has kept the streak alive. Produced by longtime collaborator Sam Kassirer, Historical Conquests features brash, expansive guitar songs periodically soaked in orchestration and sprinkled liberally with biblical and historical references. Folk-rock loves to be intellectual, and Ritter is no different, turning his music into a sort of pre- Yankee Hotel FoxtrotWilco. As for opener Eric Bachmann, the former leader of Archers Of Loaf and Crooked Fingers found inspiration in his touring van for To The Races, an excellent solo album that finds him in a stripped-down and gentle mode.
