Robbers On High Street are from New York. But they’re from Poughkeepsie, New York, which is more like being from Connecticut, which might explain why they sound like they’ve read as many books about ‘60s pop as they’ve listened to records from that era. ROHS’s newest, Grand Animals, feels a bit more suburban than their debut Tree City. It sounds more comfortable, like they’re trying less to fit in with some posturing city crowd and proud at last of the lawns they once mowed for their dads. Great Northern’s wintry debut, Trading Twilight For Daylight, is like a comforting fire after coming in from the cold: The drums are as crisp as packed snow, the pianos and guitars ring out with the majesty of Christmas carols, and the glockenspiel notes twinkle like miniature tree lights while icy voices ooze melodies like a slow-motion thaw. Also playing: Goodbye Girl Friday, Til We’re Blue Or Destroy.
This Fun Fun Fun Fest kick-off show is free, courtesy of Sweet Leaf Tea and The Onion. And don’t forget, go to the show and enter the drawing for your last chance to win a pair of 2 day passes to Fun! Fun! Fun! Festival ! Drawing will be held at the show!

Kill Me Tomorrow

A California band that slots in neatly with groups like Liars and (a little less so) The Rapture, Kill Me Tomorrow plays murky post-punk full of ray guns and trashcan beats. The noise levels on 2004’s The Garbageman And the Prostitute, released by recently deceased label GSL, hang out almost exclusively in red-line territory, but the songs are tight and danceable nonetheless, and apparently there’s also a cogent story somewhere behind all of the squall: lead songwriter Zack Wentz recently completed a disturbingly grim science-fiction novel of the same name. The death of GSL means that the consistently underrated San Diego outfit has not one to release its latest batch of songs, but it’s doubtful that a band that creates arty, filthy rock this viscerally satisfying will be adrift for very long. Opening: Toko Ri Get High, The Balcony.
