Polyphonic Spree w/ Rooney/Redwalls

It wasn’t surprising that The Polyphonic Spree was treated like a phenomenon when it debuted: With rafter-reaching pop songs, a full choir, and cultish matching robes, the Dallas band inspired lots of love or fear, and not much in between. This year’s The Fragile Army probably hasn’t made anyone switch sides (and neither has the live show, which still incorporates the robes), but the strength of the 12 songs proves that TPS still has energy to burn. As for Rooney, the O.C.-aided outfit recently returned after several false starts with Calling The World, a continuation of the quintet’s pursuit of radio-ready hooks from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Opener The Redwalls went from unknown to over-hyped to neither with bewildering speed following its major-label debut, De Nova. Aside from a stint opening for Oasis, The Redwalls stayed close to home last year, working on their just-released self-titled follow-up. (The Redwalls also play an in-store at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m.)
