Norwegian Sondre Lerche has dabbled in plenty of styles during his 25 years on Earth, though he definitely put his best foot forward with this year’s more rocking Phantom Punch. Most recently, Lerche scored the Steve Carell film, Dan In Real Life, a task he took seriously, attending auditions and sleeping overnight on the film’s set. Opener Dan Wilson cut his teeth as a guitarist in pop outfit Trip Shakespeare, which gained a cultish following in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. By the late ‘90s, his second band, Semisonic, landed a platinum-selling album on the strenth of its single, “Closing Time.” Here he plays in support of his second solo offering, Free Life, released last month.

You’ve got to hand it to bands—like Pepper—that have somehow spawned full-fledged careers singing about downing brews and
blunts with their brahs and babes. Perhaps it was fate that Sublime met an early demise and passed on the West Coast reggae-rock torch, because Pepper’s been supplying the frat-party soundtrack ever since. The group’s laid-back, beach-y roots may be in Kona, Hawaii, but these bros practically define the Volcom-loving, skates-and-tats lifestyle of the SoCal dude. Pepper only bolstered that coastal cred with its 2006 release, No Shame, featuring Tony Kanal of No Doubt and Nick Hexum of 311 as producers. Opening: The Expendables, Passafire.

The animated Budapest ghetto-dwellers in 2004’s The District! cycle through cut-out facial expressions, launch into exuberant hip-hop songs, and live in oddly warped buildings, but Aron Gauder’s film continually pushes the filth and absurdity up front with its giddy sensory wonders. (In one scene, a used condom and some dog shit on the sidewalk provide visual aid for an epiphany.) A group of scrappy kids go back in time to buy some mammoths and beef up the world’s oil reserves, but their scheme quickly fattens up the neighborhood’s rival Ukrainian and Gypsy gangs, making way for one the funniest cataclysms you’re likely to see in a movie this year (through Nov. 22)

Austin electronica gurus The Octopus Project make wonderfully vibrant pop that dances wildly between sunny hooks and grungy noise. It’s weird enough to thoughtlessly slap the “experimental” tag on it, but that term conveys a sort of guesswork that’s clearly not in play here: Rock-evolved techno-tinged songs such as “I Saw The Bright Shinies” on the new Hello, Avalanche skip along with catchy precision. The album is a trippy blast, and that didn’t happen by accident—and live, the band exudes a level of warmth and glee not usually felt from the average crew of keyboard-punchers and knob-twisters. Maybe Horse Plus Donkey will also lighten up and apply its apocalyptic reverb to a goofy three-minute pop song instead of its usual sinister (albeit entrancing) slouch toward Bethlehem, but even if they don’t, chamber-rock group Cue will smooth any rough edges with
its soundtrack-ready slices of heavenly orchestral pop.
