Aesop Rock counts as a major star in the world of independent rap, where he’s remained a flagship act of El-P’s Definitive Jux, arguably the most vital label in the hip-hop underground. Rock’s mindful rhymes stream out at warp speed, with a style built around Shakespearean jester’s mix of self-depreciation and incentive urgency. Rock stared down the streets and science-fiction with a strong focus on his 2003 album Bazooka Tooth, and he does much the same on the recent None Shall Pass, an album produced for the most part by Blockhead (read: non El-P), who also appears here. Expect lots of raised arms and furrowed brows. Opener Black Moth Super Rainbow plays a lo-fi mix of roller-disco jams, sunshine pop and what sounds like intercepted interstellar broadcasts as heard on its recent Dandelion Gum, the follow-up to last year’s collaboration with Austin’s own Octopus Project, The House of Apples and Eyeballs.

Coheed and Cambria w/ Clutch and The Fall of Troy

Sat. 11/17 | 5:00PM @ Waterloo Park (Downtown)

12 People Like this Event.  I Like It

Coheed And Cambria’s mix of emo and prog-rock hasgarnered frequent comparisons to Rush (and not just because singer Claudio Sanchez sounds so much like Geddy Lee). The band can be cartoonish—but even when its penchant for tangled storylines and album titles like Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume 1: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness leap well over the line separating ambition and pretension, Coheed And Cambria’s precision is undeniable. Here it plays to tout Good Apollo,’s second volume, No World For Tomorrow. Opener Clutch has moved in and out of fashion several times over 16 years by simply remaining the same: The band’s chunky,riff-heavy sound has been variously recognized as grunge, stoner rock,nü-metal, and ‘80s retro during the brief reign of each trend. But Clutch’s deft sense of rhythm, cleverness, and willingness to tour incessantly have allowed it to dance on the graves of many bands. Also opening: The Fall Of Troy.

Little Brother broke out with 2003’s The Listening, a retro manifesto that catapulted beat genius 9th Wonder to the top ranks of hip-hop producers, and followed it up with a forceful major-label debut, 2005’s The Minstrel Show. MCs Phonte and Big Pooh specialize in R&B-slanted, pop-spiked rhymes, while 9th Wonder’s skills landed him high-profile producing spots with Destiny Child and Jay-Z. It was announced earlier this year that 9th Wonder has left the group, but his absence shouldn’t put a dent in this show in support of the new Getback.

Glorium is one of those bands whose influence on other bands, in particular those in the Austin music scene, outsines its own legacy. Although it grew up with, (and in some cases shepherded) groups like …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead and Spoon, and despite being handpicked to tour with the likes of Fugazi, Glorium’s noisy, new-wave0tinged art0rock never really got its moment in the sun. Following two excellent LPs (Cinema Peligrosa and Eclipse), a long hiatus and side projects like guitarist Ernest Salaz’s I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkeness have kept the band on the back burner, but after regrouping for a show this past summer, Glorium have reportedly been at work on new material. Also appearing: DJ Rapid Ric, DJ NickNack.

The Dwarves, 13th Victim, Here Comes Trouble + TBA

Sat. 11/17 | 8:00PM @ Red 7 (Downtown)

2 People Like this Event.  I Like It

Dwarves have played self-consciously bizarre punk and organized offensive shenanigans for nearly 20 years; frontman Blag Dahlia has a knack for dreaming up new ways to piss people off. His latest escapade began with “Massacre,” from 2004’s The Dwarves Must Die (whose cover, incidentally, features a little person on a crucifix surrounded by three naked women). The song, which includes a guest appearance by ex-Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri, features the lyric, “This one goes out to Queens Of The Trustfund / You slept on my floor and now I’m sleeping through your motherfucking records.” QOTSA frontman Josh Homme wasn’t amused, and he either broke a bottle over Dahlia’s head or “tapped Blag in the eye,” depending on who’s telling the story. It’s all par for the course for Dwarves, whose hoax about their guitarist’s death in the mid-’90s led to their dismissal from Sub Pop. Live, the band is notorious for 15-minute sets full of blood and bizarre sexual overtones, so skittish concertgoers may want to stay in the back. Opening: 13th Victim, Rogers Porn Collection, Capital Scam.
