Lo-fi louts Love As Laugter, which started out in the Pacific Northwest as Sam Jayne’s strange side-project while he was setting punk stages ablaze with criminally forgotton Lync, is now a proper band based in New York. On 2005’s Laughter’s Fifth, the quartet rifles through garage touchstones, preening rock cliches, and feverish purgings not unlike those of Modest Mouse, with whom Jayne has performed. New Roman Times shared stages with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Cursive, and The Rapture in its Orlando hometown but recently moved to the increasingly greener pastures of Austin in search of wider attention to its dark, danceable post-punk. Opener Yellow Fever continues to melt indie hearts with its minimalist rock shuffle and slinky-cool female vocals.

A free-jazz pioneer whose music was underappreciated even in the loose and fast ‘60s, Albert Ayler turned the saxophone into an instrument capable of expressing rage and confusion as much as sex and swagger, a radical innovation that Ayler was convinced that someday, somewhere people would dig. Unfortunately, Ayler was found dead at the age of 34, only eight years after recording his first album, so he never got to see his massive influence play out in the free-jazz and no-wave movements that followed. Seven years in the making, Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin’s exhaustive, illuminating documentary My Name Is Albert Ayler follows the Cleveland-born musician’s journey from his adopted home of Sweden to his untimely suicide in New York’s East River, interviewing family, friends, and acolytes, and turning up never-before-seen footage of Ayler and his band in the process. (Also Nov. 21 for $8.25)
