A seminal underground figurehead into sex, dirt, pain, and the like, Lydia Lunch got her start in the late ‘70s with the no-wave punk band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Since then, she’s been a fixture on the fringes of noise-rock and spoken-word performance art, teaming with everyone fron Sonic Youth to Exene Cervenka. Lunch has appeared on a dizzying number of recordings in recent years, and in even more anthology publications—including Sex and Guts, which she co-edits. Her most recent in a long line of discs are an EP collaboration with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta and the just-released home recording The Ghosts of Spain. This rare Austin performance, entitled Hangover Hotel, promises to be heavy on “sick poems” and ambient soundscapes.

Spill Canvas w/ Meg & Dia, PlayRadioPlay!, New Atlantic

Tue. 11/20 | 10:00PM @ Emo's (Downtown)

The Spill Canvas is essentially South Dakota singer-songwriter Nick Thomas. The band’s biography claims that Thomas’ songs “transform late youth angst into brutally honest anthems,” but in reality they bear a remarkable resemblance to the type of lite-folk that VH1 regularly dishes up, despite positive reviews in the likes of Seventeen magazine. Meg and Dia Frampton
inspire immediate, obvious comparisons to Tegan And Sara. Their self-released debut, Our Home Is Gone, featured sibling harmonies backed by acoustic guitar, though the addition of a backing band for last year’s Something Real meant less indie quirk and more poppy sheen. Also playing: PlayRadioPlay!, New Atlantic.

Get a glimpse of seldom-seen endangered local salamanders in Germaine Keller’s “Salamander Chalk Drawings,” a temporary public art display on the lawns of Barton Springs. The native-to-Austin Barton Springs salamander is endangered, and its appearance in the wild continues to decrease as Austin’s population grows. Like most salamanders, the Barton Springs salamander depends on cold, flowing and unpolluted spring water, which becomes more scarce daily.read more at austin360.com

A free-jazz pioneer whose music was underappreciated even in the loose and fast ‘60s, Albert Ayler turned the saxophone into an instrument capable of expressing rage and confusion as much as sex and swagger, a radical innovation that Ayler was convinced that someday, somewhere people would dig. Unfortunately, Ayler was found dead at the age of 34, only eight years after recording his first album, so he never go tto see his massive influence play out in the free-jazz and no-wave movements that followed. Seven years in the making, Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin’s exhaustive, illuminating documentary My Name is Albert Ayler follows the Cleveland-born musician’s journey from his adopted home of Sweden to his untimely suicide in New York’s East River, interviewing family, friends, and acolytes, and turning up never before-seen footage of Ayler and his band in the process.
