Attack Formation is not Playing.  They are playing At LAmbert's Bar B Q on Dec. 20th.

Attack Formation has always been hard to pin down. The avant-garde collective constantly appears under different monikers and features a rotating cast of permanent members and guest vocalists whenever it plays, to the point where one never knows quite what—or whom—to expect. This year’s We Are Alive In Tune muddied the waters even further, tapping more than 25 musicians (Big Boys’ Tim Kerr and members of Trail Of Dead, Those Peabodys, and The Arm among them) for contributions. Frontman Ben Webster is still the howling idiot savant at the center of the band’s perfect storm of post-punk fury, but—given the way the band blurs the lines between performer and audience—in a way he’s just a stand-in for all of us. One of Austin’s best—and regrettably unheralded—bands, opener Manikin stretches reverb-drenched proclamations of gloom and doom over a bed of razor guitar and insistent post-punk rhythms. Also appearing: Prince Klassen.

RoboCop

Although it spawned two lesser sequels and an ill-fated TV series, visionary/nutjob director Paul Verhoeven’s original science-fiction police story is actually much too dark and weird to be franchise material. Far more cynical than the typical superhero story, the original RoboCop always bets on black in its tale of an officer (Peter Weller) who is resurrected as a cyborg after being violently gunned down. While this update of the Frankenstein myth wrings plenty of pathos out of Weller’s struggle to rectify his new life as a machine with his memories of the loving wife he left behind, the film’s most lasting value is in its increasingly trenchant satire: Verhoeven fills every frame with wry, dystopian futurism
through commercial parodies and visions of cities run wholly by corporations, making a bold, mordantly funny statement about the loss of the individual in a land ruled by the credo, “I’ll buy that for a dollar!” (Also Nov. 24)
