An agile band that mingled ska and new wave without overstretching either, The English Beat started as part of the Two-Tone scene that gripped England in the late ‘70s. The group angled alongside some of the socially conscious concerns aired by progressive bands of the time—back when simply existing as a “multiracial” band was viewed as a political act—but The English Beat never raised as much radical capital as, say, The Specials. The band did pen a string of terrific songs, though: “Mirror In The Bathroom,” “Twist And Crawl,” “Save It For Later,” “I Confess,” and so on. These days there are multiple versions of the band on the touring circuit, the result of a schism between vocalist Ranking Roger and guitarist Dave Wakeling (even VH1’s Bands Reunited couldn’t reunite them); this is Wakeling’s version of The Beat.

“Indie-country-electro” rapper Astronautalis hasshared the stage with everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to The Polyphonic Spree to Rancid, which indicates both how seamlessly he blends his indie-rock, IDM, and hip-hop influences and howschizophrenic the resulting songs are. “Meet Me Here Later,” from his sophomore album The Mighty Ocean And Nine Dark Theaters, is as good an introduction as any: Winkingly sentimental, it comes off like El-P sitting in with Built To Spill as remixed by The Postal Service. Also playing: Listener Project, Transmography.
