Written in a haze of marijuana smoke by Jack Nicholson, Bob Rafelson, and The Monkees themselves, Head was the film that finally proved the prefab-four were much more than just B-grade Beatles. A stream-of-consciousness head-trip of satirical skits that take on the Vietnam War, the nature of celebrity, and the group’s own identity, linked by ingenious if totally tangential segues, the movie represented a quantum leap in creativity over the sophomoric formula of the orginal TV show. The film begins with one of the band members attempting suicide and gets weirder and darker from there. The notorious film helped alienate the Monkees’ young fan base and destroy their careers, but not without one hell of a send-off.
