Considering how often the names My Bloody Vlaentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain get bandied about as influences, it’s a great compliment to say no one currently does the ‘90s noise-pop revival better than Austin’s own Ringo Deathstarr, who combines a bunker-thick blend of fuzzed-out guitar and laconic vocals in a way that negates the need for Kevin Shields to ever get off his fat ass again. The band headlines a free night where echo pedals go to 11 supported by spacy, soundtrack-ready instrumentalists My Education and the murky submarine rock of Horse Plus Donkey. The Story Of opens with songs from last year’s The World’s Affair, which borrows the joyous pop of Out of the Blue-era ELO and adds bouncy piano, brass licks, and even a children’s choir. The Boxing Lesson fills the middle slot with dark-tinged, Moog-flavored power-pop.

No artist has more consistently ridden the bucking trends in country music over the past quarter-century than George Strait, remaining as dominant on the charts as he is true to his Texas roots. This year Strait registered his record-setting 55th No. 1 single with the Charlie Robison penned “Wrapped,” furthering a legacy of classics like “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind,” “Ocean Front Property,” and, of course, “All My Ex’s Live in Texas.” – Doug Freeman

1984’s Revenge of the Nerds registered an important symbolic victory for outcasts everywhere and provided an easy headline for two decades worth of articles about Bill Gates. As progressive as it was, however, it isn’t far removed from the broad, crass lowbrow comedies of the time—for a major refinement on the same formula, try Real Genius the following year. The story of a preternaturally gifted brainiac learning about pranks and parties from his smartassed roomate (Val Kilmer, never more likeable) is sharp-toothed and surreal where Nerds is lazily prurient, and its affectation for its subjects is far more genuine: Nobody makes physics look as cool as Kilmer, whose wardrobe of ironic T-shirts and heatmiser hair practically invented indie-rock. This Quote-Along screening features subtitles on favorite lines (“Your mom puts license plates in your underwear?”) and surprises like lasers, Jell-O eating contests, and popcorn coming through the walls. Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.
