Blackbird by David Harrower / Directed by Mark Pickell

Fifteen years ago, Una and Ray had a relationship. They haven't set eyes on each other since. Now she's found him again.

Ken Webster (Austin Critics' Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for Best Actor) and Xochitl Romero (who recently won raves in Dog Sees God at HPT) star; Mark Pickell of Capital T Theatre (Mr. Marmalade, Happy Days) directs this astonishing play that won the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Play -- London's most prestigious theater award.

The raves are already coming in for Blackbird.

"one of the most richly challenging plays for audiences this year...a boiling kettle with no vent for the steam" - Austin American-Stateman

Robert Faires, on KUT radio:

Over 75 minutes we learn much about these two—how they are now, and how they were then—and come about as close to comprehending people in their situation as we can without being inside their skins. To carry us that far, however, requires actors who are willing to crawl inside these characters' skins . . . In Hyde Park Theatre's production, actors Ken Webster and Xochitl Romero prove their willingness to do just that. . . . Their performances show honesty and commitment.

Reservations 479-PLAY

Radio Silence

VORTEX Repertory Company and Uprise! Productions proudly present the world premiere of Radio Silence: a word opera, a fresh-to-death new bullet in the chamber from award-winning playwright, Zell Miller III. Radio Silence: a word opera is a fast paced rhythmic ride. This hip-hop theater performance piece fuses the physicality of modern dance with high-energy spoken word and the sensibilities of street politics. This new word opera is a choreopoem that challenges and redefines taboos including race, sex, religion and politics, with the back-drop of a fading media: the radio.

ELIOT HAYNES
Starring JAMIE GOODWIN, JANELLE BUCHANAN, ANGELA RAWNA,
and SYDNEY ANDREWS

“A superb new drama ... an inspired study in moral uncertainty with the compelling structure of an old-fashioned detective drama.”
   - The New York Times

AUSTIN, TEXAS – ZACH Theatre presents John Patrick Shanley’s suspenseful, new drama Doubt, A Parable directed by internationally renowned playwright Steven Dietz. This fast-moving drama, set in the Bronx against the backdrop of a Catholic school in 1964, is as gripping as it is thought-provoking. When a strong-minded nun grows suspicious of a young priest who seems to take a special interest in a new student, she faces the decision of a lifetime. Does she voice her concerns even if she's not entirely certain of the truth or bury her suspicions and leave room for doubt? One of the biggest Broadway hits in recent years makes its Austin debut at ZACH April 3 – May 11.

“A theatrical experience … sinful to miss,” wrote New York Magazine of Doubt –winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play!

Janelle Buchanan, star of ZACH's Omnium-Gatherum, portrays Sister Aloysius who ignites a fast-paced game of cat and mouse, when suspicions emerge that, at first, have little credence. And then, suddenly, she has a case that appears rock solid. But is it? Sister Aloysius has been unhappy ever since the arrival of the handsome, charismatic priest played by Jamie Goodwin, star of ZACH's Present Laughter, at the school where she presides. She uses every means at her disposal to trap him into a confession, including the reluctant assistance of an impressionable young nun, played by Sydney Andrews. Their fierce, and often humorous, clash of wills takes the audience on an unforgettable journey, filled with surprising twists and turns, that leaves everyone debating for weeks afterward.

“The experience of seeing this show is like watching the best suspense, detective story,” says ZACH Artistic Director Dave Steakley, “It has the appeal of a fantastic whodunit that has you on the edge of your seat guessing ‘did-he-or- didn’t-he?’ right up until the end.”

“The power of Doubt comes not just from what you see on stage but in the conversations the show prompts when the curtain comes down.” says playwright Shanley. Offering immediate opportunity for discussion, ZACH Theatre is conducting audience-participation talkbacks moderated by playwright and dramaturg C. Denby Swanson after every performance.

"I know of no recent play that is so startlingly and simultaneously personal and political," says director Steven Dietz, "… while tackling a subject that every salacious goon on the evening news has tried to turn into ratings fodder. Shanley has conjured the heart of the issue – and the people in its wake – with respect, dignity, passion and complexity. In his pitch-perfect rendering, Shanley has not ripped a story from the headlines: he has ripped up the headlines and found the real story underneath."

With absolute certainty, Doubt is the play to see in Austin this Spring.

--------------------------------------------

About the Playwright: JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY
A New York playwright, screenwriter, and director, John Patrick Shanley earned almost overnight recognition with his play, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 1984. The Bronx-raised author began his writing career while still in elementary school, penning poems at age 11 and winning a statewide essay competition the following year. After interrupting his college education with a tour of duty in the Marines, Shanley obtained his degree in educational theater. By age 26 he began writing what became his first hit. Previously, Shanley began to find outlets for his stage work, which often revolves around working-class, ethnic concerns in the early 1980s.

With 1986's Women of Manhattan, he inaugurated an association with the Off-Broadway nonprofit Manhattan Theatre Club, which went on to present Italian American Reconciliation (1987) and his Hollywood satire Four Dogs and a Bone (1993). In 2001, the playwright veered into a slightly different direction with Cellini (which he also staged), an ambitious if flawed portrait of a creative genius. Shanley made his Hollywood reputation with Moonstruck (1987), a deftly constructed romantic-comedy set in Brooklyn's Italian-American community. The film won three Oscars, including one for Best Original Screenplay, and was a huge box-office success. In 2004, Shanley was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame. In 2005, John Patrick Shanley's play Doubt was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Play.

About the Director: STEVEN DIETZ
Steven Dietz’s recent directing work includes the West coast premieres of Jeffrey Hatcher’s Murderers and Diana Son’s Stop Kiss for Seattle Repertory Theatre; and his own play, Fiction, for ACT Theatre, Seattle. Since 1983, Mr. Dietz has directed world premiere productions of new plays at numerous American regional theatres, including Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Northlight Theatre (Chicago), San Jose Repertory Theatre, City Theatre Company (Pittsburgh), Westside Arts (Off-Broadway), and the Sundance Institute. He was resident director for ten years at the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, where he also served as Artistic Director of Midwest PlayLabs. Mr. Dietz is also one of America’s most widely-produced contemporary playwrights. Recent work includes the Pulitzer-nominated Last of the Boys; the Edgar Award-winning Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure; the widely-produced baseball adaptation, Honus and Me; and several recently completed commissions for the McCarter Theatre (Princeton), Steppenwolf Theatre (Chicago) and the Denver Center Theatre Company. Mr. Dietz and his family divide their time between Seattle and Austin, where he is a professor of playwriting and screenwriting at UT.

ABOUT THE CAST:

JAMIE GOODWIN – (FATHER FLYNN) Jamie Goodwin has performed in a number of performances at ZACH Theatre, in addition to his work in television, film, Off Broadway and regional theater.
