1 17 104088 Evil Dead, The Musical Evil Dead, The Musical makes its Central Texas premiere this October at Salvage Vanguard Theatre in Austin. About the Show: With the approval of film director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell, a musical version of the film Evil Dead was staged. The musical takes creative liberty with the plot line of the cult film trilogy, mixing together the characters and concepts of all three. The original production enjoyed a successful run in Toronto and Montreal. The show went on to gain favorable responses from both critics and audiences during its 2006-2007 off-Broadway run. The musical has gone on to subsequent performances in Louisville, KY, Seoul, Korea, and Tokyo, Japan. When: October 9-31. Written by director Mel Brooks and the film's star, Gene Wilder, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has all the usual -- and in this case slightly unusual -- suspects: the reluctant scientist Frederick Frankenstein, who is actually the grandson of the infamous creature-creator (pronounced "Fronken-steen" and played by Wilder), his spoiled fiancee (Madeline Kahn), Igor the pop-eyed hunchback (Marty Feldman), his dizzy assistant (Teri Garr), the castle's hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), and, of course, the Monster (Peter Boyle). Highlights include the sets, which are the original ones used in the Whale films; the beautiful black-and-white cinematography; and the fine screenplay. Combining noirish elegance with uproarious sight gags and double entendres is a feat Brooks pulls off fabulously, directing the wonderful ensemble to act with sensitivity and humanistic feelings as well as with lunatic abandon. Leslie Muchler investigates consumer desire and organization through digital drawing and collage. Using catalogue glossies from Crate & Barrel, Ikea, Pottery Barn, and others, she creates a, “hybrid-form of organization that speaks about the many tastes and design influences surrounding our consumer culture.”  The repetition, warping, and stretching of these ready made forms into landscapes and architecture creates the joining of contrasts. “I am designing hybrid storage systems- modular pieces that grow in response to collection, yet strive to minimize such expansion. Sure, we can try to hate it for inspiring MEET THE SPARTANS, DISASTER MOVIE, SUPERHERO MOVIE, MOVIE PARODY MOVIE: THE MOVIE (man, I’d still pay money to see that last one) and every other box office comedy turd that they keep flushing down the throats of the mall theater going public. But god damn it, even though half of the movie is nothing but what should have been bad puns, each and every one just works so perfectly. Maybe it’s the brilliant send up of the overly dramatic disaster movies of the time. Maybe it’s Leslie Nielsen’s superb deadpanning. But my money is on the fact that it’s just plain hysterical to watch shit hit a fan. As always with a Quote-Along, we’ll have all of our favorite lines subtitled on the screen so everyone can yell them out together, and we’ll have a bunch of special props to make the whole experience jump off the screen even more. Expect some paper airplane piloting contests before the movie, and don’t miss your chance to try a “Don’t Call Me Shirley” Temple – the traditionally kiddie drink made all alcoholic and defeating the whole purpose of the original.
