Founded in the spring of 2006, the Painterly Handsomes have come together to develop ideas in popular culture, current events, classic portraiture, urban art and postmodern concepts. Though the four individual artists have differences in their own disciplines, they have dedicated the past year to visually exploring these stimuli individually and having some serious fun along the way.

For more information, contact info@pumpproject.org or (512) 351-8571.

These activities provide youth participants with non-linear creative exercises that relate to everyday life experiences. Greater Tomorrow uses art education as a means of fostering analytic thinking processes that are necessary for balanced intellectual development. Greater Tomorrow also provides in-service and in-training to art teachers.

Greater Tomorrow was established in 2002 by the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Fine Arts (COFA) at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with school art teachers, students, school administrators, community-based organizations, philanthropic organizations, professional artists, private citizens, and community leaders in Austin.

Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars, and collaborations. Creative Research Laboratory is located in east Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capital Metro's Route 18.
Sans Borders: Paintings and Prints by Thomas "Taiwo" DuVall

What: Art Opening

Where: New East Gallery

1601 E 5th St. Suite 106

When: February 16, 7-10pm

DiverseArts is proud to host Sans Borders, a collection of paintings and prints by Thomas "Taiwo" DuVall. Well known and respected for his talent as a musician and folklorist, DuVall is also an accomplished artist. He worked as artist for Third Press, NY from 1972-74, where he illustrated the popular children's book The Adventures of Smallhead, Squarehead, and Fathead. In 1993 he was awarded the State of Maryland Governors Citation by former governor William Donald Schaefer. His artwork was also published in the International Review of African American Art (vol. 16, No. 3) in 1999, but throughout his career he has continued to pursue personal artistic endeavors, many of which will be exhibited.

The exhibit includes a range of works spanning from forty years up until the present. Many of DuVall's woodcut prints of both urban and native scenes will be on display. They are marked by their amazing detail and contrast. Also included are his paintings which vary from dramatic realism to stylized scenes with obvious folk influences. Born in Washington D.C., Taiwo has chosen Austin as his place of residence, and DiverseArts, along with the New East Gallery, is proud to represent him as a local artist. The opening will take place at the gallery on February 16 from 7-10pm and the show will run through March.
