For information about the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, contact Carolyn Porter, carolynp@mail.utexas.edu, 512.471.3379. --------------------------------------------------------------- Each year roughly 160 students graduate with a B.A. or B.F.A. from the Studio Art Division or a B.F.A. in Visual Arts Studies Division in the Department of Art and Art History.  On Saturday, February 23, the Creative Research Laboratory will present the work of Austin’s most exciting young emerging visual artists in: Senior Art Exhibition 2008.  This years’ juror, Clint Willour, curator at the Galveston Art Center, has compiled an exhibition representing a full range of media from drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, metals, prints and photographs, to video and performance. Both the studio and VAS program in the Department of Art and Art History are among the most diverse in the country, with 390 students pursuing degrees in Studio Art (both B.A. and B.F.A. degrees) and Visual Art Studies. The curriculum stresses both hands-on technical development and fluency in contemporary visual art discourse. Students selected for the exhibition finish their degree programs in the Fall 2006, Spring 2007 or Summer 2007. Clint Willour has been Curator of the Galveston Arts Center for the past seventeen years and also served as its Executive Director for ten years.  Willour has served on a number of art councils and organizations throughout Texas including the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the San Antonio Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs as well as the Houston Center for Photography. In Galveston, he curates 24 shows per year, and often serves as a guest curator for institutions all over Texas.  Willour also contributes regularly to institutional catalogues and brochures as well as for the publications Artlies and Spot.    The Creative Research Laboratory is a component of the University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts in the Department of Art and Art History. It serves as a flexible interdisciplinary educational environment advancing professional practices in Studio Art, Art History, Design, Visual Art Studies and Art Education. As a creative incubator, it is designed to facilitate collaboration between artists and scholars and connect with diverse communities at large. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations. Greater Tomorrow provides supplementary art experiences for K-12 students in the public schools and within community settings. These activities provide youth participants with non-linear creative exercises that relate to everyday life experiences. Greater Tomorrow uses art education as a means of fostering analytic thinking processes that are necessary for balanced intellectual development. Greater Tomorrow also provides in-service and in-training to art teachers.
