David Ohlerking paintings

The walls at New World Deli offer the perfect backdrop for David Ohlerking's expressive paintings. This show will run through the month of March and features the artist's soulful skyscapes and bold land and cityscapes. Ohlerking, whose focus has been mainly figurative painting, brings that same living, breathing quality to his abstracts and scenic painting. Absolutely enjoy the quality sandwiches and soups while you are there, or experience the new and inspired dinner menu.

Katy Heinlein - Unknown Pleasures

Women & Their Work proudly presents Unknown Pleasures, a solo sculpture exhibition by Houston-based artist Katy Heinlein. Using sinuous folds of draped fabric as her medium, Heinlein creates surprising structures full of elegance and moxie that invite the viewer to look beneath the surface. Swathed around hidden buttresses, assuming shapes ranging from quirky to austere, Heinlein's carefully choreographed cloth challenges our perceptions of traditional sculpture. Fabric is deeply rooted in our lives as it both adorns and conceals, and Heinlein's sumptuous materials, bunched-and-gathered shapes and flirtatious jolts of color playfully navigate the line between preserving mystery and revealing unknown pleasures.

Artists Joelle Geisler, Josh Green, Brian Hollingsworth, Jo Ann Santangelo, Cory Skuldt, Leah Smith, Jeanne Stern and Dan Zinno will be showing work that is geographically but not thematically related. Short films and videos will be shown at 7:30, followed by musical entertainment by fellow northeasterner Billy Cook and Austinite Gary B.

Exhibit on view through March 31.

Each of these artists arrived independently here in Austin via Boston. Some of us were born and raised in the Boston area, while others moved there from elsewhere (drawn by the dazzling array of higher education) before eventually settling in Austin. So many of us seem to travel the well worn path between these rhyming sister cities that we’re convinced there must be a special magnetic force between them. How does that force affect the wide range of paintings, sculpture, movies, wearable art and interactive objects produced by Boston Austin transplants? Come decide for yourself.

CONTACT: Cory Skuldt at 512.897.7092 or cory.skuldt@gmail.com

WEB: http://www.myspace.com/theoperahousestore
