Of all of the best alt- and indie-rock bands out there, Built To Spill is arguably the least exciting, which probably helps explain how leader Doug Martsch has kept it going for so long. Onstage and on record, the group goes about its business with little fanfare, letting Martsch’s guitar wizardry do most of the talking. He also knows his way around a pop song, though things have gotten progressively less interesting since 1999’s Keep It Like A Secret. Even so, BTS still knows how to put on a solid show. The history of openers Meat Puppets more than makes up for the headliner’s lack of drama, though things seemed to have straightened out for the Kirkwood brothers since they reconvened—following a jail sentence and drug problems—in 2006. Also playing: Helvetia.

Firs saw Pinata Protest in the loft of In the Flesh Tattoo Studio several months ago. When I heard this punk band had an accordian player, I had to see them. I thought what a combination. To my surprise, I really liked them. They have high energy and in your face lyrics. I bought their CD that night Alvaro. A must see band for the experience.
