Austin’s What Made Milwaukee Famous began its journey to fame in 2006 when it signed with Barsuk Records (original home of Death Cab For Cutie), which re-released the band’s debut, Trying To Never Catch Up. Fortunately, the hometown boys make good on that promise on the brand-new What Doesn’t Kill Us, adding appropriately sized stadium bravado to its already shimmering indie-pop gems, and crafting a record that may finally garner it the sort of media fawning, soundtrack work, and ringtone money afforded to Barsuk’s most celebrated product. WMMF plays a CD-release show here aided by sets from three Austin bands due for their own breakouts: ice-water dance-rock from The Lemurs, countrified synth-pop from Loxsly, and dreamy harmonies from Black Before Red.

The past few years have been exceptionally good for Boston’s Dropkick Murphys: Not only has their Pogues-gone-hardcore sound been given a boost by the success of the likeminded Flogging Molly, but when their beloved Red Sox won the pennant in 2004, they used the Murphys’ version of the Broadway hit “Tessie” as a rallying cry. As a result, the Farrelly brothers’ Sox-based comedy Fever Pitch featured several Dropkick Murphys songs, and both last year’s The Meanest Of Times and the high-profile inclusion of “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed continued the winning streak. Opener Big D & The Kids Table is a throwback—albeit a sincere, well-executed, and surprisingly eclectic one—to the ’90s ska-core boom. Also playing: Everybody Out!
