Laid-back, sun-drenched, good-time grooves: sounds like every hipster’s version of hell. But it’s hard to find anything particularly bash-worthy about The Expendables’ anemic reggae and sub-Sublime frat rock. Free of pretension, coolness, and any idea of what the Velvet Underground was, the Santa Cruz group has spent years building a fan base. The Expendables’ most recent disc, a self-titled full-length released last fall, is a geeky yet muscular mix of skank-ready rhythms and old-school pop-punk perfectly suited for dudes who still rock goatees and chain wallets. Opening: Outlaw Nation.

It’s been a long time coming, but Austin noisemakers Experimental Aircraft have finally completed their trinity. Album No. 3, Third Transmission: Meet Me on Echo Echo Terrace, also marks the quartet’s 10-year anniversary. Guitarist Rachel Staggs’ voice still floats in a dreamy haze over big walls of gorgeous, reverbed dream-pop, the kind that makes you wish 120 Minutes was still on MTV. Fellow local psych upstarts Honey Thief and This Will Destroy You feel the noise first. – Audra Schroeder
