“I hear the Rapture’s coming; they say He’ll be here soon. Right now there’s demons crawling all around my room.”
So opens Saturnalia, the Sub Pop debut wrought from the apocalyptic pairing of dark souls Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli, aka the Gutter Twins. Though Lanegan and Dulli have combined forces in the past – most recently with Lanegan’s contributions to Dulli’s Twilight Singers – the Gutter Twins marks their first full collaboration as songwriters. The result is predictably intense, both having fronted seminally disturbed 1990s outfits: Lanegan the Screaming Trees and Dulli the Afghan Whigs.
“We completely collaborated on these songs together,” Dulli acknowledges. “It was easy. We’re already bros, and when you’ve got someone who can complete your musical thoughts, that’s less work for you. As a man of leisure, I couldn’t have been happier to have a cohort.”
Dulli laughs over the phone with a caustic levity, and his graveled voice, like Lanegan’s, still wrestles with past demons of addiction and depression. Saturnalia couldn’t be anything but darkly ferocious, even as the portentous pull of experience behind Lanegan’s baritone and Dulli’s surging guitars pounds against the album’s biblical metaphors of fiery resurrection.
“I think it’s equally quite hopeful, in my way,” chuckles Dulli. “I don’t think anybody thought we were going to come out and sing about lemonade lakes and peppermint gates and puppy dogs.
“I think we’ll do this, and we’ll do our own thing, but we’ll always come back to this,” Dulli offers of future collaborations with Lanegan. “He’s like my best friend, so I’m sure we’ll do it many more times. It’s like Waylon and Willie.” – Doug Freeman

The Gutter Twins are an unlikely pairing that makes more sense once both participants are distanced from their respective histories. Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and Greg Dulli of Themore
The Gutter Twins are an unlikely pairing that makes more sense once both participants are distanced from their respective histories. Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs both had loose (and different) ties to grunge in the ’90s, but both also seized upon moody, downtrodden themes from their early days. Lanegan has a gruff, charred-out voice that sounds better the slower it goes, while Dulli’s has grown deeper and more soulful the more he’s immersed himself in atmospherics (see also his work with Twilight Singers). Here, The Gutter Twins play behind their new Sub Pop album Saturnalia. Opening: Great Northern.

GZA/ Genius of Wu-Tang Clan @ Emo's
We all wish Nas had performed Illmatic front to back last weekend at Emo’s. Credit Wu-Tang’s most lyrical swordsman for giving the people what they want: a live recitation of 1995’s classic Liquid Swords to kick off Emo’s 16th anniversary week. Method Man was smoother, ODB more charismatic, and Ghostface spit more complex slang, but true heads know GZA always had the sharpest tongue. Meth said it best: “We form like Voltron, and GZA happens to be the head.” Locals Zeale and Phranchyze open. – Thomas Fawcett
