Les Claypool
Sat. 03/29 | 7:00PM @ Stubb's Bar-B-Q (Downtown)
Tix $24 Adv; $26 Doors
As the bass-slapping leader of ’90s alt-rock jam band Primus, Les Claypool did more with the instrument (for good and ill) than anyone else in decades. His style is unmistakably funky, but Claypool replaced the sex in those danceable grooves with nerdy freakishness. Small wonder that Claypool has spent his post-Primus career in the prog and jam scenes, collaborating with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland of The Police in Oysterhead and guitar virtuoso Buckethead in Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains. Claypool has been busy of late making a movie (Electric Apricot: Quest For Festeroo, now on DVD), a novel (South Of The Pumphouse), and a solo album, 2006’s Of Whales And Woe. Now he’s back doing what he does best, bringing nerd music to the nerds. Opening: Tim Fite.

Not since the Ramones has there been a worthwhile band that required such a limited mental capacity to enjoy. Fu Manchu is about loud riffs, stomping rhythms, and not much else. The SoCal band’s shows follow the same philosophy, allowing anyone to tune in, turn on, and rock out in a completely unpretentious way to heavy, balls-to-the-wall rock. As an added bonus, their appearance at the Mohawk is practically guaranteed to give you a contact high. Opener Burning Brides rides a strange line between scenes, flirting with radio-ready alt-rock, vaguely stoner-ish metal, and the occasional slight nod to goth. Also playing: Max Cady.

You might recall Les Claypool from his time as the slap-happy bassist/singer in Primus. He’s pretty much stuck to the sort of complicated rock that mixes funk and Frank Zappa-style riffs. These days, he’s rolling with a quartet breaking out old and new material. Tim Fite’s nerdy, oddball hip-hop opens.more at Austin360.com
