Opening at the Creative Research Laboratory with a reception on Saturday, March 29th, the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin presents Shift, an exhibition showcasing the work of five designers completing their Master of Fine Arts degrees.  Starting March 29th and extending to April 26th at the Creative Research Lab, Shift features the work of Sana Ali, Alexandra Morton, Erin Sanders, Selina Silvas, and Christie Zangrilli.  This exhibition includes work in the form of wall covering, installation, and digital imagery.   The Department of Art and Art History is one of the largest and most diverse art departments in the country, with 62 faculty members, 673 undergraduates and 161 graduate students.  In the two-year MFA program in Design, students respond to cultural, socio/economic, material, political, geographic and temporal environments to develop a design process and methodology with applications across a range of disciplines, including graphic design, product/industrial design, film/animation, and architecture. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations. Greater Tomorrow provides supplementary art experiences for K-12 students in the public schools and within community settings. These activities provide youth participants with non-linear creative exercises that relate to everyday life experiences. Greater Tomorrow uses art education as a means of fostering analytic thinking processes that are necessary for balanced intellectual development. Greater Tomorrow also provides in-service and in-training to art teachers. Greater Tomorrow was established in 2002 by the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Fine Arts (COFA) at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with school art teachers, students, school administrators, community-based organizations, philanthropic organizations, professional artists, private citizens, and community leaders in Austin. 59056 Aldo Cibic Visits Austin    Aldo Cibic is a founding member of the Memphis Group, alongside the late Ettore Sottsass. He will be here in Austin, March 29th.   Design-wise, there weren’t many practical (or practical-looking) items to come out of the 1980s, a decade characterized by excess, frivolity, and pop-art. But, on the flip side, no other time period saw a society that collectively embraced such new, lavish and outrageous styles, full of wildly expressive shapes and forms.  The Memphis Group broke apart in the late 1980s, and Cibic went on to found his own firm, Cibic Design, carrying with him his live-by motto: “You need to be brave.” He continues to make interesting, colorful, and unique home furnishings, now with an eye more toward proportion and balance.
