With the finesse to move from pop troubadour to wordless DJ to heartbreaking romanticist, David Garza has paved an intricate boulevard through his musical career. First playing at the shabby Deep Ellum bars in downtown Dallas before the age of 18, the Texas native high-tailed it to Austin in 1989, attending the University of Texas on a classical guitar scholarship. There he and other students formed the mildly popular acoustic group Twang Twang Shock-A-Boom. The bohemian dilettante soon dropped out and went solo, eventually signing with Atlantic Records and earning a track on the 1998 film “Great Expectations” and appearing in an infamous Best Buy commercial. With passionate live performances and unflinching dedication to his music, Garza has garnered comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Robert Plant.

The Decemberists’ front man and songwriter, Colin Meloy, credits his uncle with turning him on to college radio bands like the Replacements, Camper Van Beethoven and R.E.M. in sixth grade while his peers were jamming to Poison and Guns ‘N Roses. His introduction to those offbeat acts clearly influenced his songwriting for the pop-indie Portland band, whose sound has often been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel. As part of the release of his solo album, “Colin Meloy Sings Live!,” which includes castoffs from the Decemberists’ albums as well as Smiths covers, Meloy is embarking on an acoustic solo tour with singer/songwriter Laura Gibson.more at austin360.com
