It’s a familiar problem with follow-ups to critically acclaimed debuts: Someone convinces the artist to clean up the sound, but the streamlining erases the more inspired quirks that made the first record so interesting. So it is with British Sea Power, whose 2005 album, Open Season, has the same string arrangements and quiet, floating harmonies of 2003’s The Decline Of British Sea Power, only re-framed as calculated pop instead of carefree post-punk. If they’ve heard from detractors who miss the latter, they apparently don’t care, as the recent Do You Like Rock Music? reaches even further into the sonic realms of U2. Opener Film School plays drone-y pop that evokes a shoegazing blend of My Bloody Valentine and The Church. Also playing: Colormusic.
