Largely known for her more commercial glasswork, Thomas is also one of Austin’s most gifted visual artists who works with a variety of materials, in a number of different media. For this exhibit, New East will devote a significant amount of gallery space to highlight Thomas’ bold and expansive abstract paintings. Like much of her glasswork, Thomas’ current crop of 2D works are also unapologetically intense, expressive, edgy, in-your-face visual assaults that are simultaneously fierce, yet subtle and beautiful. A working artist in Austin for over 20 years, Reji Thomas has operated a successful glass art production business that has produced pieces for dignitaries and collectors around the globe. Beginning April 12th and extending to May 2nd at the future home of the Visual Arts Center in the Art Building at the University of Texas at Austin, XIII features the work of Jani Benjamins, Kalleen Chilcote, Buster Graybill, Jule Jones, Anna Krachey, Christa Mares, Kurt Mueller, Jill Pangallo, Karri Paul, Matthew Rebholz, Laura Turner, Amelia Winger-Bearskin, and Virginia Yount. This exhibition includes work in the form of video, performance, installation, painting, photography, and sculpture.   The Department of Art and Art History is one of the largest and most diverse art departments in the country, with 62 faculty members, 673 undergraduates and 161 graduate students. The MFA Program in Studio Art at UT Austin is ranked twelfth, among 572 rated Liberal Arts Universities in the country, by U.S. News and World Report. The Painting Program is ranked third and Printmaking is ranked the sixth. The MFA Program in Studio Art is an intense and challenging 3-year program. Students work closely with faculty and consult with distinguished visiting artists and critics as they investigate contemporary art issues, build conceptual and technical skills, and develop independent creative work. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.
