Now and Tomorrow, now in its’ 5th year, celebrates the visual and material culture of Austin area youth, featuring drawings, paintings and ceramic work.   Students from the following schools will be included in this year’s exhibition; Reagan High School, Hill Country Middle School, The University of Texas at Austin Elementary School, Maplewood Elementary School, Fannie Mae Caldwell Elementary School, Forest Trail Elementary School, Ridgetop Elementary School and the Greater Tomorrow Youth Art Program.    The exhibition, Now and Tomorrow, is produced by Greater Tomorrow Summer Art Program, an outreach program in the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History, at the University of Texas at Austin. Greater Tomorrow provides supplementary art experiences for K-12 students in the public schools and within community settings. These activities provide youth participants with non-linear creative exercises that relate to everyday life experiences. Greater Tomorrow uses art education as a means of fostering analytic thinking processes that are necessary for balanced intellectual development. Greater Tomorrow also provides in-service and in-training to art teachers. Greater Tomorrow was established in 2002 by the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Fine Arts (COFA) at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with school art teachers, students, school administrators, community-based organizations, philanthropic organizations, professional artists, private citizens, and community leaders in Austin. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars, and collaborations. Creative Research Laboratory is located in east Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters. Largely known for her more commercial glasswork, Thomas is also one of Austin’s most gifted visual artists who works with a variety of materials, in a number of different media. For this exhibit, New East will devote a significant amount of gallery space to highlight Thomas’ bold and expansive abstract paintings. Like much of her glasswork, Thomas’ current crop of 2D works are also unapologetically intense, expressive, edgy, in-your-face visual assaults that are simultaneously fierce, yet subtle and beautiful. A working artist in Austin for over 20 years, Reji Thomas has operated a successful glass art production business that has produced pieces for dignitaries and collectors around the globe. Beginning April 12th and extending to May 2nd at the future home of the Visual Arts Center in the Art Building at the University of Texas at Austin, XIII features the work of Jani Benjamins, Kalleen Chilcote, Buster Graybill, Jule Jones, Anna Krachey, Christa Mares, Kurt Mueller, Jill Pangallo, Karri Paul, Matthew Rebholz, Laura Turner, Amelia Winger-Bearskin, and Virginia Yount. This exhibition includes work in the form of video, performance, installation, painting, photography, and sculpture.   The Department of Art and Art History is one of the largest and most diverse art departments in the country, with 62 faculty members, 673 undergraduates and 161 graduate students. The MFA Program in Studio Art at UT Austin is ranked twelfth, among 572 rated Liberal Arts Universities in the country, by U.S. News and World Report. The Painting Program is ranked third and Printmaking is ranked the sixth. The MFA Program in Studio Art is an intense and challenging 3-year program. Students work closely with faculty and consult with distinguished visiting artists and critics as they investigate contemporary art issues, build conceptual and technical skills, and develop independent creative work. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations. Creative Research Lab is located in East Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capitol Metro's route 18.
