On her new tribute, Just a Little Lovin’ (Lost Highway), Shelby Lynne doesn’t mimic Dusty Springfield as much as revel in each song’s Southern soul roots. At SXSW 08, the L.A.-based singer/guitarist ignored an audience there to schmooze, laying down an exquisite late-night vibe. Let’s hope the ever-charismatic singer with marvelous pipes includes a couple from her admirable past this go-round, as well. Shelby Lynne has released a string of albums that find her straddling the fence between traditionalism and the kind of contemporary country that hits big in Nashville boardrooms. For her 2000 breakout, I Am Shelby Lynne, she lured Sheryl Crow producer Bill Bottrell out of retirement and reinvented herself not as an heir to Patsy Cline but as a pretender to Dusty Springfield’s throne. Springfield’s presence will hang heavy in the air here, as Lynne performs tracks from her new Just A Little Lovin’, a tribute album to the English pop legend. The record features numerous Springfield songs, as well as a new track written by Lynne. Opening: David McMillin.

Labored of the love of late night movies that changed your life forever caught alone in one endless summer, with picnics in graveyards, with guitars and tambourines.
