Forever a sharp-dressed man, Joe Jackson’s latest, Rain (Rykodisc), arrives at the elegant jazz he’s been hinting at for years. A move to Berlin last year may have something to do with the UK singer/pianist’s mood, but with longtime drummer Dave Houghton and bassist Graham Maby along for the ride, the creator of power-pop hits like “I’m the Man” and “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” isn’t slowing down, just steppin’ out. Recognized as one of this country greatest living composers, Adams visits the Butler School of Music to receive the University of Texas’ $25,000 biennial King Award for Musical Composition. And to celebrate there will be three nights of Adams’ music with the composer in attendance. At 8 p.m. Monday, UT Symphony Orchestra will play ‘The Wound-Dresser,’ based on Civil War poems by Walt Whitman. At 8 p.m. Tuesday, UT’s New Music Ensemble plays ‘Christian Zeal and Activity,’ ‘Phrygian Gates’ and ‘Chamber Symphony.’ At 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Butler School’s Wind Ensemble joins forces with the Choral Arts Society, Concert Chorale, Women’s Chorus and Men’s Chorus for ‘Fanfare for Great Woods,’ ‘Short Ride in a Fast Machine’ and ‘Grand Pianola Music.’ All concerts are in Bates Concert Hall, Music Building, Trinity Street and Robert Dedman Drive. $10-$17 ($5-$10 students). Tickets available at box office one hour before concert. All concerts will also be Web cast live at music.utexas.edu.
