Hailed for an inaugural Austin production in October 2008 following 21 years throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for a profound alternate approach to dance, Chaddick Dance Theater returns to continue building a reputation of “creating wonderfully full bodied dances that breathe, beautifully phrased, and explore matters of the heart” (San Francisco Bay Guardian) with the premiere of its second Austin production where audiences are invited to let go and experience Freefall. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;"> Freefall combines three new beautifully choreographed works and a special multi-media tribute to northern India culture as Cheryl Chaddick (pronounced "CHAIR-uhl"), the company's artistic director, vividly integrates strong messages of commitment, sacrifice and individuality with her dancers’ sheer talent that is sure to captivate audiences.   “This brand new set of dance works was inspired by the idea of freefalling and exploring the possibilities in modern dance,” said Chaddick. “This production uses the dancers’ extraordinary abilities to connect with the audience and tell stories of overcoming life’s challenges and accepting ourselves and each other for who we are and despite our differences.”   Freefall invites audiences to experience through the dancers a letting go: of one’s ego, of the familiar, of home, and of the expected. This production takes a deeper look into the thread that runs though the human condition from the epic story of Exodus to a very personal struggle of finding individuality despite social norms. Each performance also include with a multi-media tribute to Chaddick’s childhood spent partially in northern India.   The premiere of Freefall will mark Chaddick Dance Theater’s second production in Austin since returning to Texas after 20 years of choreographing, performing and teaching in San Francisco. Chaddick Dance Theater’s debut Austin production in 2008, Second Wind, won two of her dancers nominations in “best dancer award” category from the Austin Critics’ Table Awards.   THE PROGRAM “Three for Violin” showcases the dancers’ sheer talent with luscious violin suites and serpentine movements. The multi-layered elements create a vibrant, uplifting piece and fully exhibit the dancers’ abilities. This piece will feature recordings by: The Lyric Quartet.   “The Watchful Sleeping Heart” symbolizes the story of the Book of Exodus, representing experiences of the unforgiving, unrelenting desert trek from the Torah and the Old Testament and—universally—the strength of the human will when seeking a better life. The dance is inspired by the exodus of the Israelites leaving Egypt and their wandering, confusion, death, challenges of faith, and relentless sacrifice for 40 years to seek freedom in the Promised Land. This piece is a reflection of fortitude and fight in seeking freedom as the sole reason for living and dying. This piece will feature recordings by: Maya Beiser, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Morgan Doctor.   “I’m Your Lullaby” takes an unconventional look into the idiosyncrasies of those we love and those merely tolerated in a humorous but loving depiction of mannerism, labels, worries and impulses that create the individual presence. Chaddick believes that our individuality is slowly melting together into a homogenized pot as differences are shunned and peer pressure often wins. This work attempts to turn the mirror around to get a glimpse of the human struggle to stay authentic by adopting self-commitment. This piece will feature recordings by: Thomas Newman.   “Faces and Images of India” will be included in each night’s performance as a multi-media piece that addresses Chaddick’s old fears and embraces the past 35 years through photos and music expressing the full body of the northern Indian culture. This program is designed to teach a full range of stop motion puppetry arts. Storyboarding, scripting, puppet design/construction, music, set design, filming and editing. The project runs 10 weeks, starting June 11, the workshops will be held Wednesday/Thursday from 11am to 5pm.   The first week will be an orientation and brainstorming sessions the next six weeks will be devoted to  production, puppet and stage design and construction, the final three weeks will be editing and DVD transfer. We intend to make sure that everyone gets a chance to work all aspects of their production. The end of the program culminates with three showings of their films, which will be offered free to the public. The showings will be held at a local venue, preferably the Long Center, and each participant will receive a copy of their film.   It is our hope that this program will provide an artistic outlet for kids giving them a chance to try a variety of different art forms at one time. Drawing, sculpture, painting, and movement are all incorporated into the program. It also teaches them to work together as a team. All our programs are an exercise in the teamwork between director, stage techs, puppeteers, and puppets. Like a machine all parts must work in unison in order to turn out the best product possible. The educational benefits include writing, science, and math skills. Finally it provides all the participants with a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when a project comes together and you take your bows in front of an applauding audience.   The program is provided free of charge to kids from or visiting the Austin Community. Many were built in the 1920's and 40's when Provincetown was becoming an art colony. The shacks have no electricity, no running water and are not easily accessible. The Atlantic with miles of deserted pristine beaches is about 100 yards away. Through the years, writers and artists have called the shacks home for months, even years-- Jack Kerouac, e.e. cummings, Mary Oliver, Eugene O'Neill, Annie Dillard, Jackson Pollock and Willem deKooning to name a few. Suzanne Lewis was awarded an artist-in-residency there last summer. In this exhibit at Wally Workman Gallery, she charts her experience with stunning photographs, abstract paintings and a sense of humor.
