Unjustly ignored in its initial run, Galaxy Quest is an unusually sharp satire of pop-culture fandom, D-grade celebrity, and science-fiction tropes masquerading as a big, dumb fantasy movie. Concerning the erstwhile stars of a Star Trek-like show who are recruited by actual extraterrestrials to help them defend their planet, Galaxy Quest succeeds mostly due to the excellent performances of its cast, particularly Tim Allen’s Shatner-esque egomaniac and Alan Rickman’s bitter, Shakespearean-trained actor, whose career has been wasted underneath a ridiculous latex head appliance. The inside jokes should be familiar to even the most casual of sci-fi fans, but they’re pure ambrosia to geeks like presenter MC Chris—the “nerdcore” rapper best known for his work on Adult Swim—who introduces the film here.
