Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter (as well as their frequent third David Wain) seem to be experts at garnering a cult following. All four of their collective comedy projects—the MTV sketch show The State, the uproarious summer-camp movie satire Wet Hot
American Summer, and both incarnations of Stella (live variety show and short-lived Comedy Central series)—are revered among those in the know everywhere. Credit that to Black and Showalter’s smart humor, which is fresh, silly, and (not counting Black’s frequent stints on VH1 talking-head shows) surprisingly cool. Here, two-thirds of Stella and two-elevenths of The State perform back to back stand-up sets in celebration of their new respective albums: Black’s I Am A Wonderful Man and Showalter’s Cats & Sandwiches.

The dance floor could well be a swimming pool when this one’s all over. The driving horns and signature second line NOLA funk of Big Sam’s Funky Nation is the main event, but good luck sitting still for the opening act. Local R&B shouter Black Joe Lewis gets the frenzy started, showing off the old-school sounds of his new Honey Bears lineup. The group’s latest single, “Gunpowder,” is a blast. – Thomas Fawcett

Local country chanteuse Sunny Sweeney unpacks more twang than Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton, and, after standing in the Opry spotlight last year, she may put more cowboys in her Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame than either. Corb Lund rides his band of Hurtin’ Albertans down from Canada on the banjo-and-steel-saddled balladry from latest Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! Betty Soo opens with her delicate pop. – Doug Freeman
