Even in the precious world of indie rock, it’s possible to be too cutesy, and Mates Of State have been toeing that line for most of their career. But the dewy duo continues to save itself by producing albums that are better than the previous ones, including the new Re-Arrange Us, which puts a few spins on the band’s drums-and-organ format via extra instrumentation from producers Peter Katis, Chris Walla, and Spoon’s Jim Eno. Its 10 catchy songs are so solid that you probably won’t even notice their creators making googly eyes at each other. Headlights hails from Illinois, though sonically—with its gauzy harmonies and swooping guitars—it could be the offspring of Britain’s early-’90s shoegazer movement and the chipper side of the Montreal scene. Also playing: Black Joe Lewis.

AA-S Best Bet – Ladytron:
If you like females and robots — specifically, female robots — then you probably love the English electro-pop quartet Ladytron. Formed in 1999 with principal members Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt, Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo, Ladytron soon rose to popularity with the release of the band’s first album, “604,” in 2001. Two records and seven years later, the four-piece has rolled out “Velocifero,” which they support tonight at Stubb’s.

Despite hit-or-miss debut Broken Boy Soldiers, Jack White and the Raconteurs stormed Austin City Limits Music Fest 2006 like a seven-nation army, even firing off a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).” The supergroup reloads Friday night (Saturday is sold out) with latest Consolers of the Lonely, a dynamic combination of Brendan Benson’s best melodramatic ballads and garage blues. Two of the buzzier bands at SXSW team up for a tour. Man Man plays a brassy, bent blues, while Yeasayer’s modified world-beat is reminiscent of Brian Eno’s work with Talking Heads.

Yes, these shows are separate tickets, but it’s clearly a good night to be at Emo’s. Inside you have the Dirtbombs, perhaps the very embodiment of smart, forward-thinking garage rock, playing with Kelley Stoltz and Black Joe Lewis. Outside, you have the Hold Steady, who simply can’t stay off the road with their brainy bar rock. The inside show is $14; the outside show is $18.

Managing to be polarizing without doing anything in the least bit outlandish, The Walkmen pump out waves of big, hooky rock that hews toward The Strokes and Interpol while showing more heart than both those bands. Their songs are straightforward art rock at their core, but organ wash and spacious guitar effects keep that core nice and murky. The Walkmen’s last recording was Pussy Cats, a remake of the cover-heavy album that Harry Nilsson made with John Lennon and lots of drinks in the ‘70s, but there’s talk of new material to be tested here. Austin’s Horse Plus Donkey opens this free show with its reverb-laden post-punk shudders, followed by the jangled nerves and blood-on-the-highway ballads of Zykos.

The Fiery Furnaces chopped up everything from frantic blues-rock to synth-y silly pop on their 2003 debut, Gallowsbird’s Bark, and apparently haven’t tired of building entire albums from scraps since. Siblings and leaders Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger usually make those scraps charming and catchy, keeping the hooks and art-rock trickery coming at equally befuddling speeds. They’re also compulsive storytellers (they even made a concept album about their grandmother, 2005’s Rehearsing My Choir) and the tales often make the songs a little easier to follow. Then again, even those are pretty easy to lose track of on the new Widow City, on which the Furnaces’ approach is a bit less satisfying than before, but still lively and elusive. Chicago’s Pit Er Pat has toured relentlessly since its 2005 debut full-length, Shakey, honing its airy, improv-informed sound on last year’s Pyramids.

There are plenty of reasons to love Man Man, but the most compelling is its utter absurdity. Honus Honus (a.k.a. Ryan Kattner), the gravel-voiced frontman and the band’s only original member, sports an admirable moustache/half-dyed pseudo-mullet combo and does an old-fashioned boot beat-stomp while clad all in white during the band’s excellent live show. During “Push the Eagle’s Stomach,” from the Philadelphia hobo-junk-blues collective’s sophomore album, Six Demon Bag, someone (a high-pitched demon, perhaps?) screeches what sounds like “my brown eye’s blacker than yours,” simultaneously invoking scatological humor and playing off Kelis’s hit of yestersummer. Yes, Man Man thrives on the bizarre and has an almost circus-like originality. And therein lies much of the band’s charm.-Prefix Mag
