Blogged-about indie-rockers, legendary punks, and mobile dance parties: This year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest has it all, including a headlining reunion show from the late, lamented Murder City Devils that should have the whole music world’s eyes on Waterloo Park this weekend. But it’s not just nostalgia acts (although there are plenty of veterans like Angry Samoans, The Saints, and Lifetime whose LPs make up the backbone of many a punk’s record collection): This year’s Fest boasts a who’s who of the here and now, including buzzworthy names like The New Pornographers, Against Me!, Okkervil River, Girl Talk, Battles, Ted Leo, Of Montreal, and Explosions In The Sky. While you’re out basking in the crisp autumn weather (reason enough alone to make Fx4 the year’s most enjoyable outdoor festival) take a moment to thank the rock gods that you live in Austin. They like to feel appreciated.

Minus the Bear, w/ The Helio Sequence and Tiny Vipers

A band as proudly progressive as Minus The Bear shouldn’t tread water with its third full-length. And yet Planet Of Ice triumphs precisely because it halts the group’s forward momentum in favor of hushed, brooding contemplation. The mood suits them. After the disc suffers a weak start with the grating, effects-hampered “Burying Luck” and the inconsequential “Ice Monster”—where new keyboardist Alex Rose spreads on way too much synthesized cheese—”Knights” perfects Minus’ glitch-prog with jabbing guitars, jittery effects, and Jake Snider’s tense yet smooth ruminations on sexual economics.
From there, Planets enters another dimension. With heavy debts to Pink Floyd and Adrian Belew-era King Crimson, the disc uncoils with a sinister playfulness that culminates in “When We Escape”—which sports a majestic, alien chorus that imagines Jawbox covering Alan Parsons Project. The just-as-sublime nine-minute closer “Lotus” is exactly what mid-period Cave In should have sounded like. While not a huge sonic leap forward for Minus The Bear, Planet shows the band eager—and more than able—to take a deep breath and explore its emerging maturity and depth.-The A.V. Club
Two Gallants, Blitzen Trapper, Songs For Moms (TIX @ FRONTGATETICKETS.COM)

Those who think the do-it-yourself aesthetic can’t work in the end should acquaint themselves with Two Gallants. The San Francisco duo formed in 2002 and began booking shows wherever they could (and setting up outside subway stations whenever they couldn’t). 2004’s well-received The Throes caught the attention of celebrated Nebraska indie label Saddle Creek, which put out last year’s What the Toll Tells, a gripping collection of art-damaged murder ballads and gentle, eerie folk. The duo kept busy this summer by touring, releasing an EP and a self-titled album, and going back to the Houston venue where a fight broke out last October between the band and a police officer investigating a noise complaint. (Two G’s drummer Tyson Vogel was among the arrested, but charges were eventually dropped). Opener Blitzen Trapper’s take on Pavement-esque indie rock snagged the band a contract with Sub Pop, and the mostly justified hype behind the recent Wild Mountain Nation is steadily mounting.
