These days – when membership of the rock army can be symbolised by the simple purchase of a Ramones T-shirt – dedication has become a debased currency, subject to the hyper-inflationary dictates of fashion. more at www.austin360.com

Yes, these shows are separate tickets, but it’s clearly a good night to be at Emo’s. Inside you have the Dirtbombs, perhaps the very embodiment of smart, forward-thinking garage rock, playing with Kelley Stoltz and Black Joe Lewis. Outside, you have the Hold Steady, who simply can’t stay off the road with their brainy bar rock. The inside show is $14; the outside show is $18.

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Electric Six/ Willowz / We Are the Fury (outside)
Thu. 11/29 | 10:00PM @ Emo's (Downtown)

Logic says that a band such as Electric Six should be wearing out its welcome faster than it is, which just proves that campy songs such as “Danger! High Voltage” and “Naked Pictures” are also pretty sturdy, thanks to solid rock crunch and disco-fried grooves. The group isn’t tired of silly thrills yet, judging by its recent album, I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master. The young whippersnappers in opener Willowz serve up an unkempt mix of bluesy, rolling rhythms and garage-punk soul that evokes The Stooges and The Stones. Also opening: We Are The Fury.

Octopus Project/Horse + Donkey/Cue (outside)
Fri. 11/16 | 10:00PM @ Emo's (Downtown)
33 People Like this Event. I Like It share
Austin electronica gurus The Octopus Project make wonderfully vibrant pop that dances wildly between sunny hooks and grungy noise. It’s weird enough to thoughtlessly slap the “experimental” tag on it, but that term conveys a sort of guesswork that’s clearly not in play here: Rock-evolved techno-tinged songs such as “I Saw The Bright Shinies” on the new Hello, Avalanche skip along with catchy precision. The album is a trippy blast, and that didn’t happen by accident—and live, the band exudes a level of warmth and glee not usually felt from the average crew of keyboard-punchers and knob-twisters. Maybe Horse Plus Donkey will also lighten up and apply its apocalyptic reverb to a goofy three-minute pop song instead of its usual sinister (albeit entrancing) slouch toward Bethlehem, but even if they don’t, chamber-rock group Cue will smooth any rough edges with
its soundtrack-ready slices of heavenly orchestral pop.

Text this event Architecture In Helsinki might seem at first glance
to be Australia’s answer to Out Hud, but the coed ensemble also draws
bits from The Beta Band and Tom Tom Club. The sound came together on
the group’s rhythmically playful chant-along album In Case We Die, but
it’s doubly rousing onstage. After the release of Die, “creative
differences” led to the sudden departure of members Isobel Knowles and
Tara Shackell, so it’s not surprising that the recent Places Like This
represents a departure for the group. “Feather In A Baseball Cap” and
“Hold Music” have Helsinki architect Cameron Bird channeling Modest
Mouse-style vocals, though nothing on Places matches the catchiness or
immediacy of “Float On.” A Portland band pitched toward
disco-ventilated post-punk and no-wave noise, opener Glass Candy has
banged around the indie underground with a handful of releases for the
Troubleman Unlimited label. The group preens through party-starting
revisionism, lacing dance-y grooves with loose-limbed lurches and
vocals by Ida No, a jaw-dropping frontwoman on par with Debbie Harry
in her prime.
