We all wish Nas had performed Illmatic front to back last weekend at Emo’s. Credit Wu-Tang’s most lyrical swordsman for giving the people what they want: a live recitation of 1995’s classic Liquid Swords to kick off Emo’s 16th anniversary week. Method Man was smoother, ODB more charismatic, and Ghostface spit more complex slang, but true heads know GZA always had the sharpest tongue. Meth said it best: “We form like Voltron, and GZA happens to be the head.” Locals Zeale and Phranchyze open. – Thomas Fawcett

Riffing with fury as Queensbridge’s destined prophet, a then-20-year-old Nasir Jones spat 1994’s Illmatic across G-Funk’s low-riding six-four, preceding the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die by four months and bringing hip-hop’s crown back to its Gotham empire. Cold-blooded and precise, Illmatic’s draw stands today as MC mastery: head-banging beats from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor cuing hard-bodied rhymes spun with Eminem-influencing complexity. The game immediately belonged to the Little Homey.

Underground hip-hop’s most lyrically verbose and enunciated wordsmith swoops down on Austin’s cerebral cortex, complete with rare spots of “Daylight” amidst the Long Island, N.Y., native’s psychotic lexicon. Recently relocated to San Francisco, the Definitive Jux staple’s a year removed from his Blockhead-produced None Shall Pass, an opaque examination of those damned failed relationships. Last year proved to be a prolific one for Del The Funky Homosapien, with a solo album, Eleventh Hour, and a compilation titled Over Time with his Hieroglyphics crew. The collective—which also counts grimy battle-rapper Casual and the sunny, spiritual Pep Love among its core constituents—hasn’t been that active as a whole since 2003’s proper studio disc, Full Circle, but this tour should cement some of the group’s momentum. Opener Blue Scholars’ concerns run broad, and MC Geologic’s rhymes help to revive their urgency, even for people who think they’ve heard enough socially conscious rap lately. The Seattle duo’s second full-length, Bayani, suggests that protest hip-hop might sound best set to the thoughtful tempos of A Tribe Called Quest. Also playing: Knobody, Musab, Tanya Morgan.

AA-S Best Bet – Clinic:
If you’re not current on your indie rock vaccinations, then you should probably consult the Liverpool-based four-piece Clinic for a stout shot of hypnotic rhythms and melodies. For more than 10 years Clinic has been shape-shifting, evolving and slowly honing their trademark shoegaze drone-pop, which shines evident on the group’s fifth and latest LP, “Do It!”
Clinic’s influences take flight on “Do It!” with pepperings of Phil Spector-esque girl-pop, Morricone film scores and even punk rock — lending all the necessary immunities for you to attend tonight’s show and stave off a bad time.
