Do East Cesar Chavez

Over the past ten years, East Cesar Chavez has transformed in big ways.

Located just southeast of downtown Austin, the neighborhood offers a variety of bars, restaurants, time-honored taquerias, mom-and-pop shops, and family homes that make East Cesar Chavez a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Explore what you can see and do with our little guide here!

Heywood Hotel

1609 E Cesar Chavez St.

Austin has plenty of unique hotel experiences, but Heywood Hotel occupies a very special place. It's part 'upcycled' bungalow, part courtyard hotel; which is to say there aren't a lot of places that look like it. Add to that a staunch commitment to friendly service, and you've got yourself exactly the kind of artsy, hospitable establishment that East Cesar Chavez is known for.

Coco Coquette

2109 E Cesar Chavez St

Want a new 'do without the permanence of - uh - actually changing your 'do? Our favorite little wig studio has you covered. Stop by Coco Coquette's brick and mortar to shop for that pixie dream girl look you've always wanted. Or, if you've got yourself a little crew, they offer wig parties brought to you!

Antique Mule

4926 E Cesar Chavez St

This new highly curated shop isn't your average antique store. Antique Mule's mission is "to keep history alive" by showcasing items from the golden era of manufacturing. Prepare to find an array of uncommon objects, oddities, militaria, and more.

Black Swan Yoga

913 E Cesar Chavez St

Sweat it out at one of our favorite yoga studios in Austin, Black Swan. They're a donation-based, 90-degree heated studio, offering classes ranging in difficulty from candlelit slow flows to hot onnit and power flow. Most days they offer ten or more different class times, so take a look at the schedule and book your next flow!

Flat Track

1619 E Cesar Chavez St.

There's something to be said for a good, simple, and most importantly strong cup of coffee; which is exactly what Flat Track specializes in. Flat Track doesn't busy itself with the kind of fancy coffee-making gadgets that seem to be in vogue in a lot of cafes around the city. Inside, you'll find a smallish bar for customers to sit, and a lone espresso machine. At its core, Flat Track is a friendly little coffee joint that deals in delicious simplicity, even roasting their own beans.

VINYL Beauty Bar

2400 E Cesar Chavez St, Ste 312

Easily one of the most unique, and inclusive, spaces on the street, VINYL Beauty Bar is part full-service salon, mini-record store, and event venue. Whether you're looking for nail service, extensions, haircuts, color, hydra facials or massage, this spot is eco-friendly and 100% vegan. Your next glow-up happens here.

grayDUCK

2213 E Cesar Chavez St.

As far as spots hosting visual art go, grayDUCK is one of the best on East Cesar Chavez. With a frequently rotating gallery of talented artists displaying unique and vital works, you never know what you're going to find when walk in.

Ezov

2708 E Cesar Chavez St

Ezov, named after the Hebrew name for hyssop, one of the main ingredients in the spice blend za'atar, is a top new restaurant from the Emmer and Rye Hospitality Group. This new spot has taken over Pitchfork Pretty's old location on Cesar Chavez, with a menu that celebrates the markets of Tel Aviv with a Texas twist. Their dishes are created with fresh and bold flavors, like the Halloumi topped with date molasses, pistachio dukkah, and greens of galilee, and the Kofta made with lamb & beef, pine nuts, fire roasted eggplant, and spring onion.

Bufalina

2215 E Cesar Chavez St

Known for having some of the best Neapolitan pizza in town, Bufalina is a must on your Cesar Chavez bucket list. This location has more than just crispy, cheesy pizzas to offer, with starters like stracciatella and salads, handmade pastas, calzones, and desserts. Stop by during their happy hour everyday from 4 pm - 5:30 pm for ½ off bottles of wine under $100, ½ off pizzas, and $2.00 off house wines & draft beers.

Make sure to also check out Palm Pizza, Bufalina's New York-style pizza joint, that also just happens to be on Cesar Chavez.

Sawyer & Co.

4827 E Cesar Chavez St.

Truth be told, East Cesar Chavez had been in sore need of a place to get good Cajun/Creole food. Sawyer & Co. handily (and thankfully) filled that gap. Opened on the ashes of what used to be Arkie's Grill, Sawyer & Co. serves New Orleans classics like jambalaya, crawfish étouffée, boudin, oysters on the half shell, and naturally, gumbo. Of course, to make you really feel like you're in New Orleans, they have a full bar on hand.

la Barbecue

2401 E Cesar Chavez St.

La Barbecue has been a delicious force in Austin since it was established in 2012 by LeAnn Mueller (grandchild of pitmaster Louie Mueller) and pitmaster John Lewis (formerly of Franklin Barbecue). With a menu that offers all the meaty essentials (Brisket, Beef Ribs, Pork Ribs, Pulled Pork, Turkey, Sausage), La Barbecue frequently tops year-end lists for the best barbecue in town (if not the entire world.) Even Jimmy Kimmel found time to sample their top-notch meats the last time he was in town.

Taqueria Chapala

2101 E Cesar Chavez St

Located next to Coco Coquette, this spot is downright delicious if you're looking for authentic Mexican fare. Their menu "boasts a delectable array of dishes, from flavorful tortas to soul-warming soups, mouthwatering quesadillas, savory seafood, hearty burritos, and more."

Juan in a Million

2300 E Cesar Chavez St.

Legendary Tex-Mex joint Juan in a Million has a taco so large it could feed an army. It's called the Don Juan El Taco Grande, with enough potato, egg and bacon tastiness to share with the whole table. Make sure you're good and hungry for this one. And don’t forget to order a nice, cold glass of Horchata while you're at it.

Juniper

2400 E Cesar Chavez St. Suite 304

A lot of people think that they don't like gin. That's mainly because they haven't had one of Juniper's gin cocktails. Combine or two of those gin cocktails with their delicious Italian inspired food, and you're going to be one happy camper. For more great Italian food just down the street check out Intero

Jacoby's

3235 E Cesar Chavez St.

Since opening in 2014, Jacoby's has been one of the primary restaurants spearheading East Cesar Chavez's ascent into the world of casual fine dining. The self-described "ranch-style cuisine" the restaurant excels in is a result of the Jacoby family's more than thirty years of experience in southern cooking. In addition to being of one the best places around to get chicken fried steak, Jacoby's also features a nearby mercantile business where various handmade sundries can be purchased.

De Nada Cantina

4715 E Cesar Chavez St

De Nada Cantina is the brainchild of the people behind Sawyer & Co and specializes in some of the best tacos around paired with strong margs. Opt for a classic frozen or one of their rotating specialty margaritas - whatever you choose, you can't go wrong.

Strangelove Coffee & Wine

2614 E Cesar Chavez St

From the folks who brought you Figure 8 and Small Victory, Strangelove is a cool new concept on East Cesar Chavez that opened in summer 2025, loosely defined as a coffee shop during the day, and a chill wine bar by night.

FOUR FIVE SIX

 1910 E Cesar Chavez St

This is the newest, hottest spot on the street (seriously, every time we pass by this place looks packed). FOUR FIVE SIX is a lodge-style bar that's as unpretentious as it gets on East Cesar Chavez, plus the drinks are strong, the live music is loud, the patio is huge, and the pool table is waiting for you to show off your skills.

Lovebirds

2337 E Cesar Chavez St

If you're somewhere a little CUTER to sip some great cocktails and the like, head to Lovebirds. Trust us when we say the drinks here are handcrafted and superb, but the highlights might be the adorable glassware they serve them in! (Check out their Instagram for some examples.) We highly recommend you hit them up on Tiki Tuesdays for some seriously discounted tropical concoctions.

Drinks Lounge

2001 E Cesar Chavez St

Drinks is the type of place where you can comfortably saddle up for a beer (or three or four) while you plot the course of the rest of your evening. Oftentimes, the plan turns out to be just staying at Drinks for the remainder of the night. The drinks are on the cheap side, the bartenders are genial, and there are pool tables to keep you occupied (pool is free on Monday). Plus, they're almost always cooking up a great themed night; like a maudlin party celebrating Morrissey's birthday, for example.

High Noon

2000 E Cesar Chavez St.

This one's not your average neighborhood bar, with a huge patio, ample indoor seating for colder nights, and a cocktail menu that you'll want to try everything off of. High Noon is also a great spot to catch a live performance or two, especially on the weekends.

Blue Owl Brewing

2400 E Cesar Chavez St. #300

This urban brewery (led by Black Star Co-op alums Jeff Young and Suzy Shaffer) was the first brewery in the United States to exclusively make, distribute, and sell sour-mash beers. Now, Blue Owl Brewing brews a versatile selection of styles, like their Eastside Specialty Sours and Bob’s Fine Beers (classic, non-sour beers), ensuring that everyone will find a beer that suits their taste. They're a distinctive brewery providing a unique and down-to-earth experience for everyone who steps in their door. They also also have a small kitchen on-site, offer private brewery tours, and always have fun monthly events & workshops worth checking out.

Dainty Dillo

3201 E Cesar Chavez St

From the same folks behind Armadillo Den down south, say hello to their sister bar. If you're looking for a spot that feels more like your backyard, this is the one. Dainty Dillo boasts the best views of the Colorado River in East Austin, not to mention a fine selection of beers and craft cocktails, a kitchen cooking up smash burgers and more in-house, and several TVs to catch the big game.

Chalmers

1700 E Cesar Chavez St

This one's also from the Armadillo Den crew. Chalmers is a former gas station converted into one of the biggest bars on the East side, with tons of TVs, brews, and food from Rolling Smoke BBQ. It's got TWO outdoor patios and a ton of indoor seating as well, so bring your crew.

Central Machine Works

4824 E Cesar Chavez St

jBefore this unique East side brewpub opened in 2019 it was the site of a metal fabrication shop. The repurposed airplane hangar was designed to embrace the building’s history, while creating a welcoming space for the community. With an open concept Beer Hall and expansive Beer Garden, CMW offers a full-service bar, in-house kitchen with rotating seasonal options, and a variety of events.
