The Hold Steady has built up a devout fan base since growing out of the legend of Midwest rock band Lifter Puller, and lead singer/firebrand Craig Finn makes it easy to understand why. His style trades on patently singular vocal screeds that siphon added power when the rock gears turn higher and looser, as they did on 2006’s breakout Boys And Girls In America. The band has been playing shows seemingly all the time since then, but with its fourth album, Stay Positive, just released, expect some all-new stories about drinking, partying, and Midwestern ennui. Philly power trio The Loved Ones favors passionate, fist-pumping anthems delivered by decent, sensitive fellas who likely blast Tim and Darkness On The Edge Of Town at parties once their hardcore-punk friends pass out.

On the recent Kill Rock Stars-released We Brave Bee Stings And All, Thao Nguyen and backing band The Get Down Stay Down make arresting songs given to bluesy sparseness and nuanced cadence. While her wispy voice, playful melodies, and sense of childlike wonderment suggest just another starry-eyed female folkie, Nguyen’s dense, witty lyricism and subtle quirks (check her beat-boxing on “Bag Of Hammers”) reward deeper study. Opener Horse Feathers makes chamber-pop that frolics outside that genre’s stuffy drawing room with lithe, portable songs. On its 2006 album, Words Are Dead, instruments like mandolin, violin, saw, and cello often stack up for a bigger sound, but the group can also scale it back to just guitar and violin to carry its strong, crafty melodies.

A founding member of At The Drive-In and the frontman of Sparta, singer-guitarist Jim Ward knows how to pack a sonic punch. But he’s got a tender side, too; for the past few years he’s been releasing a trickle of solo songs on compilations that show more of the rustic side he brings to his sporadically active side project Sleepercar. The band’s recent debut, West Texas, is a full-bodied and confident expression of Ward’s guitar-and-piano-drenched pop tunes, twangy epics that fall somewhere between those of Wilco and Radiohead. Memphis punk-country outfit Lucero headlines behind 2006’s Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers. It’s a set of songs that doesn’t do much to repel the quartet’s persistent Replacements comparisons—which is a good thing. Opening: Glossary.

breaking hip-hop producer RZA declares war on analog suckas with Digi Snacks (Koch), his third LP as superhero alter ego Bobby Digital. The kung-fu obsessed Wu-Tang beatsmith is fond of sampling dusty Southern soul records but is backed live by California soul groovers Stone Mecca. As Bobby Digital, RZA spits bizarro non sequitur rhymes in his trademark staccato flow: “I talk with the awkward slang, I walk with the Wu-Tang.” – Thomas Fawcett more at austinchronicle.com

Bob Mould’s latest, District Line (Anti-), finally throws back to the howl of his first band, eardrum-shattering Minneapolis trio Hüsker Dü. Mould’s previous solo disc, 2005’s Body of Song, was hit-or-miss, more electronic and contemplative, but District Line, featuring the return to drumming of Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, pulls up his post-punk roots, and given its title, we probably have his adopted home of D.C. to thank for that. California trio Halou lays down the ambience first. – Audra Schroeder

Considering how often the names My Bloody Vlaentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain get bandied about as influences, it’s a great compliment to say no one currently does the ‘90s noise-pop revival better than Austin’s own Ringo Deathstarr, who combines a bunker-thick blend of fuzzed-out guitar and laconic vocals in a way that negates the need for Kevin Shields to ever get off his fat ass again. The band headlines a free night where echo pedals go to 11 supported by spacy, soundtrack-ready instrumentalists My Education and the murky submarine rock of Horse Plus Donkey. The Story Of opens with songs from last year’s The World’s Affair, which borrows the joyous pop of Out of the Blue-era ELO and adds bouncy piano, brass licks, and even a children’s choir. The Boxing Lesson fills the middle slot with dark-tinged, Moog-flavored power-pop.
