The one-time heroes of Texas rock, The Toadies were supposed to be huge. Their singles “Possum Kingdom” and “Tyler” were all over national radio and MTV (“Kingdom” was even immortalized in Xbox’s Guitar Hero II), and in mid-’90s Dallas there was no band more well-liked than this batch of ordinary Fort Worth kids—the ultimate in locals-made-good. Unfortunately, the band couldn’t take the pressures of success, and following the critical and commercial failure of Hell Below/Stars Above (which even an Elliott Smith cameo couldn’t save), the band was officially relegated to the post-grunge dustbin when bassist Lisa Umbarger decided she’d had enough. These days, singer Vaden “Todd” Lewis spins his wheels in The Burden Brothers, but reformed his old group last year (with Baboon bassist Mark Hughes standing in for Umbarger) for a few successful reunion shows that have apparently reinvigorated the band.

Saturday night of South by Southwest 08, Downtown patrons filed into Cedar Street Courtyard for a casual drink. Within minutes, A Place to Bury Strangers cleared the place with an absolutely deafening set of Joy Division-inspired shoegaze from last year’s self-titled debut. The effect was unintentional. Guitarist/singer Oliver Ackermann custom-designs the NYC-based trio’s sonic effects, but beneath the grating layers of distortion are bona fide pop songs. Locals the Boxing Lesson and Ume open. Earplugs required. – Austin Powell

Is grunge back, or did it ever leave? South African band Seether closely follows other post-Nirvana sad-sack outfits like Staind, trading off minor-key rockers with minor-key power ballads on its 2002 major-label debut, Disclaimer, and its remixed follow-up, Disclaimer II. The band sprung straight onto the Billboard charts with this formula on its 2005 effort Karma And Effect, then right back off again with its acoustic follow-up One Cold Night.
