Ghostland Observatory has grown big in Austin and beyond with a sound that tips toward the electro-rock likes of The Rapture and VHS Or Beta—more so the latter, thanks to a penchant for vocoder effects that skew as suspect as often as they prove stirring. The duo spent most of 2007 breaking out behind the flashy grooves of Paparazzi Lightning, an album made for nightclub hedonism that naturally felt flaccid in the harsh light of day. Not taking any chances, the new Robotique Majestique amps up the hair-band posturing even further—the mix of Euro-metal yowls and oppressively cheesy ’80s synths evokes Billy Squier as remixed by The Crystal Method—which won’t win back cynics who have already dismissed the group. It should, however, make a huge splash amongst those who value style over substance—i.e., the majority of the music-buying public. Opening: Dr. Jack.

Within two years, The Bravery evolved from a fledgling band of college friends mixing their first record on an iMac to a buzzed-about group with a big-label deal—no surprise considering how effectively The Bravery married the new-wave rock revival headed by The Killers and pithy garage stance popularized by The Strokes. The Bravery can be a little cloying, but that hasn’t seemed to bother those who don’t worry about such things, and, on last year’s The Sun And The Moon, the group isn’t afraid to try out a couple of new ideas—including (unfortunately) taking itself seriously. Also playing: The Switches.

Robbers On High Street are from New York. But they’re from Poughkeepsie, New York, which is more like being from Connecticut, which might explain why they sound like they’ve read as many books about ‘60s pop as they’ve listened to records from that era. ROHS’s newest, Grand Animals, feels a bit more suburban than their debut Tree City. It sounds more comfortable, like they’re trying less to fit in with some posturing city crowd and proud at last of the lawns they once mowed for their dads. Great Northern’s wintry debut, Trading Twilight For Daylight, is like a comforting fire after coming in from the cold: The drums are as crisp as packed snow, the pianos and guitars ring out with the majesty of Christmas carols, and the glockenspiel notes twinkle like miniature tree lights while icy voices ooze melodies like a slow-motion thaw. Also playing: Goodbye Girl Friday, Til We’re Blue Or Destroy.
This Fun Fun Fun Fest kick-off show is free, courtesy of Sweet Leaf Tea and The Onion. And don’t forget, go to the show and enter the drawing for your last chance to win a pair of 2 day passes to Fun! Fun! Fun! Festival ! Drawing will be held at the show!

via Austin Sound:
“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”

Man Man impressed my pants off.
